Bangladesh: Former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Sentenced to 6 Months in Jail for Contempt of Court
Dhaka Bangladesh’s International Crimes Tribunal has sentenced Sheikh Hasina Wajed, the former Prime Minister, to six months in jail for contempt of court.
According to Bangladeshi media, an alleged leaked audio recording surfaced in which Sheikh Hasina could be heard telling a local leader: “There are 227 cases against me, now I’ve got the license to kill 227 people.”
The court reportedly deemed this statement as interference in judicial proceedings and contempt of court, leading to the six-month jail sentence.
Additionally, Bangladeshi media reports that the court also sentenced Shakeel Akhand, a leader of the Chhatra League (student wing of the Awami League), to two months in prison.
It is worth noting that Sheikh Hasina, head of the Awami League and former Prime Minister, fled to India last August following the student-led protest movement.
