Diplomatic Efforts Intensified for Release of Pakistani Crew Detained on Somali Vessel
Karachi: Pakistan has stepped up diplomatic efforts to secure the safe and early release of Pakistani crew members reportedly being held aboard a vessel in Somalia, as government officials continue to engage with both domestic and international stakeholders on the matter.
According to official sources, Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Junaid Anwar Chaudhry has taken an active role in the case and has established contact with senior government officials and Somali authorities to expedite efforts for the crew’s release.
The maritime minister held a telephone conversation with Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, during which both leaders discussed the situation of the detained Pakistani sailors and the measures being taken to ensure their return home. The issue has gained significant attention due to concerns for the welfare and safety of the crew members.
In addition to his discussions with the foreign minister, Junaid Anwar Chaudhry also contacted the Somali Ambassador to Pakistan. During these discussions, emphasis was placed on accelerating diplomatic and administrative procedures aimed at achieving the safe and prompt release of the Pakistani nationals.
Officials familiar with the matter stated that the government is pursuing all available diplomatic channels and maintaining continuous communication with relevant authorities to resolve the situation. The welfare of the crew members remains a top priority, and efforts are being coordinated among multiple government institutions.
Speaking about the matter, Junaid Anwar Chaudhry said that the government began taking action as soon as information about the incident was received earlier this year.
“Humanitarian efforts were initiated immediately after we were informed of the incident in April,” the minister said. “We have remained in constant contact with Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Somali Embassy to ensure that all possible steps are taken for the safe return of the crew.”
The minister emphasized that protecting Pakistani citizens working abroad remains an important responsibility of the government. He added that maritime workers often play a vital role in international trade and commerce and deserve full support when facing difficulties overseas.
Pakistan has a large number of citizens employed in the global maritime industry, including merchant shipping, cargo transport, and other seafaring professions. The government regularly works with foreign governments and international organizations to address issues affecting Pakistani sailors and maritime workers around the world.
Although details regarding the circumstances of the crew’s detention have not been publicly disclosed, officials have indicated that diplomatic engagement remains ongoing. Authorities are reportedly seeking a solution through dialogue and cooperation with Somali officials while ensuring that the rights and safety of the Pakistani crew members are protected.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is also understood to be monitoring developments closely and coordinating with Pakistan’s diplomatic missions and relevant international partners where necessary. Such cases often require cooperation between multiple governments, maritime authorities, and legal institutions before a resolution can be reached.
Maritime industry experts note that incidents involving crews in foreign jurisdictions can be complex and may involve legal, administrative, or security-related considerations. As a result, diplomatic negotiations often play a crucial role in facilitating the release and repatriation of affected personnel.
Families of the detained crew members are reportedly awaiting positive developments as the government continues its efforts. Officials have expressed optimism that ongoing diplomatic contacts will help achieve a favorable outcome and enable the crew members to return safely to Pakistan.
The latest outreach by the Maritime Affairs Ministry reflects the government’s commitment to addressing the concerns of Pakistani nationals abroad and ensuring their welfare through sustained diplomatic engagement. As discussions continue with Somali authorities, the focus remains on securing the earliest possible release of the crew and bringing the matter to a peaceful resolution.
For now, Pakistani officials say they will continue working through diplomatic channels and remain in close contact with Somali counterparts until the issue is successfully resolved and the detained crew members are safely reunited with their families.
