ISLAMABAD: Pakistan is observing the 27th martyrdom anniversary of Captain Karnal Sher Khan Shaheed (Nishan-e-Haider), one of the country’s most decorated military heroes, who embraced martyrdom during the Kargil conflict on July 5, 1999. On the occasion, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif paid tribute to the fallen officer, describing his sacrifice as an enduring symbol of courage, patriotism, and devotion to the nation.

Captain Karnal Sher Khan, who was posthumously awarded the Nishan-e-Haider, Pakistan’s highest military gallantry award, is remembered for his bravery during the fighting in the Kargil sector. According to Pakistan’s official account, he was martyred while leading his troops against enemy positions on July 5, 1999, displaying exceptional courage under intense combat conditions.

In his message, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said Captain Karnal Sher Khan’s sacrifice occupies a distinguished place in Pakistan’s military history and continues to inspire generations of Pakistanis.

The Prime Minister stated that the fallen officer’s legacy serves as a reminder that Pakistan’s freedom and sovereignty have been safeguarded through the sacrifices made by its armed forces and martyrs.

“This great sacrifice reminds us that our independence and sovereignty are the result of the sacred blood of our martyrs,” he said.

Shehbaz Sharif also reaffirmed the nation’s support for Pakistan’s armed forces, saying the people stand united with the military in confronting both internal and external challenges.

“We stand shoulder to shoulder with our armed forces against every external and internal threat,” the Prime Minister added.

Captain Karnal Sher Khan remains one of Pakistan’s most celebrated military figures. His leadership during the Kargil conflict has been widely acknowledged in Pakistan, and his courage has also been noted in various public accounts from across the border, including remarks by some retired Indian military officers who have spoken about his battlefield conduct.
