A local court in Karachi has sentenced filmmaker Jamshed Mehmood, commonly known as Jami, to two years in prison in a defamation case.

The Additional District and Sessions Judge (South) Karachi delivered the verdict, sentencing Jami to two years of imprisonment along with a fine of Rs. 10,000.

The case was filed as a private complaint by director Sohail Javed.

According to the complaint, Jami had read out a letter written by an anonymous girl who claimed to have survived a sexual assault, during the Jamshoro Lahooti Festival.

Jami later posted the letter on social media, after which many people in the comments section speculated that the alleged assailant was Sohail Javed. Jami did not deny or clarify these speculations or allegations.

Jami’s lawyer stated that the allegations made in the private complaint were false and baseless.
