Senator Cory Booker Pledges Continued Support for Better Representation of Pakistani-Americans in U.S. Courts

U.S. Senator Cory Booker has reiterated his commitment to ensuring better representation for Pakistani-Americans and immigrant communities in the American judicial system. Speaking at a fundraising dinner hosted by Dr. Ijaz Ahmad, President of the American Pakistani Public Affairs Committee (APPAC), the senator highlighted key issues impacting immigrant communities, including judicial appointments, inclusivity in the Democratic Party, immigration policy, and the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

The event, attended by members of the Pakistani-American community and other civic leaders, served as a platform to acknowledge Senator Booker’s longstanding support for marginalized voices, especially in the U.S. legal and political systems.

Championing Judicial Representation for Pakistani-Americans

Senator Booker emphasized that the fight for equal representation in American courts is far from over. He pledged to continue supporting efforts aimed at increasing diversity on the federal bench, especially for underrepresented communities such as Muslim Pakistani-Americans.

“Representation matters. I will not stop working until our courts reflect the rich diversity of this nation, including the Pakistani-American community,” said Booker.

Dr. Ijaz Ahmad lauded Booker’s pivotal role in the historic appointment of Judge Zahid Quraishi, the first Muslim Pakistani-American federal judge in U.S. history. The appointment, confirmed in 2021, marked a major milestone for Pakistani-Americans seeking greater participation in national decision-making roles.

“Without Senator Booker’s support, Judge Quraishi’s appointment might never have happened. He has been a true ally of our community,” Dr. Ahmad remarked.

Advocacy for Adil Mangi’s Appointment

Senator Booker also extended his backing to Adil Mangi, a respected Pakistani-American lawyer nominated for a seat on the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. Despite the nomination not being confirmed, Booker’s advocacy for Mangi was described as unwavering and vocal.

“Though Adil Mangi’s appointment did not materialize, Senator Booker’s support was extraordinary. It sent a clear message that our community matters,” said Dr. Ahmad.

Mangi’s nomination had sparked significant attention, not only due to his professional credentials but also because his confirmation would have marked yet another breakthrough for Muslim representation in high-level judicial roles.

Broader Support for Immigrant Communities

In his remarks, Senator Booker assured that he would continue to advocate for all immigrant communities, not just within the judiciary but across various spheres of public service, including government, education, and law enforcement.

“In America, we must ensure that no community feels invisible. My mission is to empower every immigrant group to have a seat at the table, from local boards to federal courts,” he said.

He also highlighted the importance of intersectional representation, calling for unity among different ethnic, religious, and cultural groups to collectively strengthen their voice in American democracy.

Dr. Ijaz Ahmad echoed this sentiment, stating that bold leadership is needed within the Democratic Party to bring together all communities and ensure they have a decisive role in shaping national policies.

“We need courageous leadership in the Democratic Party—leaders who not only listen but also act to ensure every community has a say in decisions that affect their future,” said Dr. Ahmad.

Gaza Crisis and Human Rights

Touching upon the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza, Senator Booker expressed deep concern for the plight of Palestinian civilians. While he condemned the October 7 attacks, he stressed that the suffering of innocent Palestinians must not be ignored.

“Yes, we condemn acts of terror. But we must also uphold our values by standing up for the full human rights of Palestinians. Children in Gaza deserve peace, dignity, and a future,” he said.

Booker’s balanced approach was appreciated by many attendees, especially those advocating for a just and humanitarian U.S. foreign policy in the Middle East.

His remarks align with growing calls within the Democratic Party to re-examine America’s role in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, particularly in light of widespread civilian casualties and humanitarian emergencies in Gaza.

Plans to Visit Pakistan

In a gesture welcomed by the Pakistani diaspora, Senator Booker announced his intent to visit Pakistan in the near future, possibly as part of a congressional delegation.

“I am looking forward to visiting Pakistan with a delegation. It is time we further strengthen ties with a nation that contributes so much to America through its vibrant diaspora,” Booker said.

The announcement was met with applause and optimism, with community members seeing the visit as a potential opportunity to deepen U.S.-Pakistan relations and build cultural and economic bridges.

Community Reaction and Vision Forward

Senator Booker’s speech and promises received a warm reception from attendees, many of whom expressed hope that his leadership would inspire other lawmakers to engage more proactively with immigrant and minority communities.

Dr. Ijaz Ahmad concluded the evening by calling on other political leaders to follow Senator Booker’s example and to see immigrant communities not just as voters, but as integral partners in shaping the future of the United States.

“Senator Booker doesn’t just show up at events—he delivers. We need more leaders who believe in action, not just words,” he said.

As the 2024 U.S. elections approach, events like these highlight the growing political influence of the Pakistani-American community and underscore the critical importance of representation, inclusion, and advocacy in shaping a more equitable America for all.
