The flood situation along the Chenab River has reached a critical stage after India released massive volumes of water, pushing levels dangerously close to the river’s maximum capacity. Authorities in Punjab have warned that if flows cross 1.05 million cusecs (10.5 lakh cusecs), controlled breaches will be made at pre-identified points to divert water and minimize damage to populated areas.

According to Commissioner Gujranwala Division Naveed Haider Shirazi, the river’s capacity at Marala and Khanki headworks stands at 1.1 million cusecs (11 lakh). To prevent catastrophic embankment failures, specific breach targets have already been identified and prepared.

Evacuations Underway

Preventive evacuation has been in full swing across flood-prone districts:

• Sialkot: 4,500 people shifted to safer locations.
• Narowal: 200 individuals rescued from vulnerable riverbanks.
• Wazirabad: Four entire villages evacuated.
• Gujrat: Nearly 15,000 residents relocated to secure shelters.

The commissioner assured that the administration has completed all necessary arrangements to deal with any escalation. “Relief camps are active, with adequate stocks of food, drinking water, and medicines,” he said, adding that health teams and rescue workers are on standby.

Controlled Breaches as Last Resort

Officials emphasized that breach operations are a last-resort safety measure, designed to release pressure from embankments and protect densely populated towns. “Targets for possible breaches have been finalized well in advance to ensure water is diverted toward agricultural land rather than urban settlements,” Shirazi noted.

Preparedness and Relief Efforts

The administration has set up emergency control rooms across Gujranwala Division to monitor the flood situation round-the-clock. Rescue 1122 teams have been deployed with boats and life jackets, while law enforcement agencies are assisting with evacuations and maintaining order in vulnerable areas.

Relief camps have been equipped with tents, dry rations, clean drinking water, and basic healthcare. Veterinary services are also being provided for livestock brought along by displaced villagers.

The situation reflects the larger monsoon crisis unfolding across Punjab. With India’s release of floodwaters into rivers Ravi, Sutlej, and Chenab, combined with heavy seasonal rains, Pakistan’s river systems are under immense strain.
