CHAKWAL: Hundreds of fish have been found floating dead on the surface of Dhok Tahliyan Dam in Chakwal, prompting concerns among local residents and visitors while authorities launch an investigation into the incident.

The large number of dead fish created a foul smell around the dam, significantly affecting the area’s environment and disappointing people who had visited the popular recreational spot. Many visitors reportedly left the site without spending time there due to the unpleasant conditions.

According to the Dhok Tahliyan Dam administration, the fish died as a result of extreme heat, which is believed to have reduced oxygen levels in the water and created unfavorable conditions for aquatic life.

Officials said measures are already underway to prevent further losses. They stated that treatment is being applied to the dam’s water in an effort to protect the remaining fish, while teams are actively removing the dead fish to reduce contamination and eliminate the foul odor.

The incident has raised concerns about the impact of prolonged high temperatures on freshwater ecosystems, particularly during the peak summer season when rising water temperatures can place severe stress on aquatic species.

Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner Chakwal has taken notice of the incident and directed officials of the Fisheries Department to conduct a detailed investigation into the cause of the fish deaths.

The inquiry will examine whether the deaths were caused solely by extreme weather conditions or if other factors, such as water quality, pollution, disease, or oxygen depletion, also contributed to the incident.

Authorities are expected to submit a report after completing the investigation, while cleanup operations and efforts to safeguard the remaining fish population continue at the dam.
