KARACHI: The Sindh government has officially withdrawn the restrictions imposed under its austerity and energy-saving campaign, allowing markets, shopping centers, restaurants, and other businesses to resume normal operating hours.

According to a new notification issued by the provincial authorities, the earlier restrictions on business timings in Karachi and other parts of Sindh have now been lifted. The decision effectively ends the partial “lockdown-style” measures that had been introduced last month as part of efforts to conserve energy and reduce electricity consumption.

Under the revised policy, all shops, markets, shopping malls, hotels, restaurants, and commercial centers will now be permitted to operate according to their regular schedules without mandatory early closing times.

The earlier notification had required businesses to shut down operations at specified hours in order to support the government’s cost-cutting and electricity-saving initiatives. The measures were part of a broader nationwide discussion on reducing energy consumption amid economic challenges and rising fuel costs.

Business owners and traders had repeatedly expressed concerns over the restrictions, arguing that shorter operating hours negatively affected commercial activity, customer flow, and daily earnings. The notification comes shortly after the Punjab government also relaxed similar restrictions on business timings. Punjab authorities had earlier announced the removal of the 8 p.m. closing limit on markets and commercial centers until June 1.

The Punjab government’s decision applied across the province and included markets, shopping malls, hotels, restaurants, food outlets, and other businesses.

Officials in both provinces say the easing of restrictions is intended to balance economic activity with energy conservation efforts while responding to concerns raised by the business community.

The earlier restrictions had been introduced under austerity measures aimed at reducing electricity usage during periods of high energy demand and economic pressure. Governments across Pakistan have in recent years periodically introduced energy-saving policies to address power shortages, reduce fuel imports, and manage rising electricity costs.

Such measures have included reduced business hours, limitations on decorative lighting, and encouragement of energy-efficient practices in commercial sectors.
