Raging Rivers Submerge 280 Villages Across Punjab; Forecast Warns of More Heavy Rains

Punjab is facing one of its worst flood emergencies in recent years as swollen rivers have submerged 280 villages, destroying crops, sweeping away homes, and forcing thousands of residents to flee for survival. What were once thriving communities now resemble lakes of devastation, with displaced families stranded along roadsides and embankments.

Sutlej and Ravi Rivers Breach Settlements

At Ganda Singh Wala, the Sutlej River continues to rage at high flood levels, prompting authorities to announce urgent evacuations from nearby villages. Meanwhile, the Ravi River has reached extreme flood stage, spilling into several parts of Lahore. Neighborhoods including Baradari, Thokar Niaz Baig, Badami Bagh, Chuhng, Babu Sabu, and Rangelpur have been inundated, cutting off communities and submerging homes.

Gujranwala & Gujrat Division Struggle with Standing Floodwaters

The situation in Gujranwala and Gujrat divisions remains dire, where stagnant floodwaters have yet to recede. Vast stretches of farmland are underwater, wiping out seasonal crops that were close to harvest. Farmers, already grappling with losses, have been forced to abandon their homes in search of higher ground.

Widespread Displacement Across Punjab

  • In Sargodha, Chiniot, Bahawalnagar, and Faisalabad, evacuations from low-lying villages are underway.
  • According to officials, 280 villages across Punjab are completely submerged, and 28 deaths have been confirmed so far.
  • Thousands of people are sheltering under makeshift tents or in government relief camps, though complaints of inadequate food, water, and medical facilities persist.

The Human Cost of Flooding

For rural families, the devastation goes beyond homes and crops. Livestock—an essential source of livelihood—has been swept away, leaving many farmers destitute. Women and children are among the worst affected, with reports of disease outbreaks due to contaminated water beginning to surface in some areas.

Weather Threat Intensifies

Adding to the misery, the Meteorological Department has forecast heavy rainfall over the next 12–18 hours in already flood-stricken districts. With high water levels in the Ravi, Chenab, and Sutlej rivers, experts warn that any additional rain could escalate flooding, posing new threats to relief operations and further displacements.

Rescue & Relief Operations

Provincial authorities, alongside Rescue 1122, Pakistan Army, and Rangers, are engaged in massive evacuation and relief operations. Boats are ferrying stranded villagers to safety, while trucks and helicopters are being used to deliver essential supplies. Despite these efforts, the scale of destruction has outpaced resources, and many affected families continue to wait desperately for aid.

Long-Term Concerns

The floods highlight chronic challenges in Punjab’s water management. Experts argue that unplanned riverbank settlements, poor embankment maintenance, and insufficient flood storage infrastructure have worsened the crisis. Calls are growing for the government to implement long-term strategies such as new reservoirs, stronger embankments, and improved early warning systems to prevent recurring disasters.
