Other Survivors

Of the teachers, Steiner managed to escape towards Meerut and survived the turmoil. Professor Ram Chandra, a Hindu mathematician of great repute, also escaped narrowly. Disguised as a villager with the help of a loyal servant, he took refuge in rural areas until he rejoined the British forces. Roberts’ two daughters and five Christian students, however, were brutally killed by the mobs.

The Destruction of the College

Meanwhile, Delhi College itself faced devastation. Rebels and mobs looted its library, tearing manuscripts and rare books into shreds. Furniture and scientific equipment were smashed. According to the historian Malik Ram, “the ignorant tore the books into pieces, destroyed the instruments, and rendered everything useless forever.” The intellectual and cultural treasure of decades was lost within hours.

For seven years, the college remained shut. When it was eventually reopened, it had lost its former spirit and prestige. By 1877, it was permanently closed, leaving behind only memories of its golden past and the scars of its tragic destruction.

The Legacy

The fall of Delhi College was more than the story of one institution; it symbolized the collapse of an intellectual movement that sought to blend Eastern and Western learning. The revolt of 1857 was not only a political and military conflict but also a cultural rupture. Mr. Taylor, remembered as a kind and scholarly principal, became one of its most tragic victims. His death epitomized the violence of the era, where education, scholarship, and humanity itself were engulfed in the flames of rebellion and revenge.

The destruction of Delhi College serves as a reminder of how fragile centers of learning can be in the face of political upheaval. What was lost in 1857 was not only lives and buildings but also a vision of a modern, enlightened India that might have emerged much earlier had institutions like Delhi College been preserved.
