Heavy Rain Expected in Karachi and Hyderabad from July 2 to 5; NDMA Issues Flood Alert

Karachi : The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a nationwide alert for heavy monsoon rains and possible flooding from today until July 5. Heavy rainfall is expected in Karachi, Hyderabad, Badin, and Thatta during the period of July 2 to 5, with a risk of flooding also indicated.

According to NDMA, between today and July 5, there is a likelihood of heavy rains in Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan, Islamabad, Potohar, Abbottabad, Mansehra, Haripur, Balakot, Murree, and the Galliyat region, which could lead to landslides and rising water levels in rivers and streams.

In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, cities like Peshawar, Charsadda, Nowshera, Kohat, Swat, Chitral, Dera Ismail Khan, Bannu, and Mardan are also at risk of flooding, with an expected rise in water flow in the Kabul and Swat rivers. Various cities in Punjab, including Lahore and Rawalpindi, are also likely to receive heavy rainfall.

NDMA has warned of heavy rains in Karachi, Hyderabad, Thatta, and Badin from July 2 to 5, which could also cause urban flooding in these areas. NDMA Chairman Lieutenant General Inam Haider has cautioned that due to climate change, Pakistan is likely to experience above-normal rainfall. The melting of glaciers in northern areas during the rains could also result in flooding.

He stated that Pakistan is among the countries most affected by climate change. During the monsoon season, sudden increases in water flow are common, and the public is advised to take precautions when near water channels. Inam Haider emphasized that NDMA is working proactively to mitigate potential risks and that the NDMA Operations Center has the capacity to issue alerts 6 to 8 months in advance in case of emergency situations.
