Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Government Makes History as Pakistani Climbers Conquer Tirich Mir under CM Ali Amin Gandapur’s Leadership
Peshawar, August 21, 2025: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur, has marked a historic milestone in Pakistan’s mountaineering and adventure tourism sector. With the government’s support, Pakistani climbers Sirbaz Khan and Abid Baig successfully summited Tirich Mir, the highest peak of the Hindu Kush mountain range, making it the first-ever government-backed Pakistani expedition to achieve this feat.
According to details, the KP government, recognizing the importance of promoting adventure tourism, provided full backing to the national climbers. The expedition was launched on August 5 from Chitral, with teams from the KP Tourism Department and supporting climbers accompanying the summit team. Despite severe weather conditions, which forced some members including the Director of the Tourism Authority and other climbers to halt at around 7,300 meters, the lead climbers successfully reached the 8,000-meter-class summit of Tirich Mir.
Tirich Mir had previously been scaled in 1950 by a Norwegian team, but this marks the first official Pakistani expedition to achieve the summit. Director General of the Tourism Authority hailed the success as a historic milestone, declaring that the achievement has opened a new chapter in Pakistan’s adventure tourism industry. “The Tirich Mir summit not only highlights the capabilities of Pakistani climbers but also demonstrates the government’s vision to elevate the tourism sector,” he stated.
Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur’s personal interest in adventure and eco-tourism was cited as a driving factor behind the extensive support provided to the climbers. Officials noted that the provincial government is keen to position Khyber Pakhtunkhwa as a premier destination for mountain tourism, leveraging the natural beauty and adventure potential of the region.
In a parallel development, the Tourism Department also launched a historic initiative involving women trekkers. For the first time, a group of 16 female trekkers began their journey towards Tirich Mir Base Camp, symbolizing inclusivity and growing opportunities for women in adventure tourism. This initiative has been widely welcomed as a progressive step to encourage female participation in trekking and mountaineering, fields traditionally dominated by men.
The KP Tourism Department confirmed that the women’s trekking group was provided with logistical support, guides, and safety measures to ensure a smooth and safe experience. Officials stressed that such initiatives not only promote gender equality but also project Pakistan’s softer image internationally.
With Tirich Mir standing as the highest peak in the Hindu Kush at 7,708 meters, the summit by Pakistani climbers Sirbaz Khan and Abid Baig has reignited interest in one of Pakistan’s most celebrated yet less-frequented mountain ranges. Experts believe this achievement will help attract both domestic and international adventure tourists to Chitral and surrounding regions.
The government’s emphasis on adventure tourism comes amid broader efforts to diversify tourism beyond cultural and religious heritage. KP’s rugged terrain, vast valleys, and challenging peaks are being promoted as destinations for trekking, rock climbing, skiing, and eco-tourism.
Officials say the success of the Tirich Mir expedition will serve as a launchpad for future mountaineering ventures, including state-backed attempts on other prominent peaks in the Hindu Kush and beyond. The DG Tourism Authority added that these initiatives also help create economic opportunities for local communities through tourism-related jobs, from guiding and portering to hospitality and transport.
The landmark achievement has been celebrated across the mountaineering community, with Sirbaz Khan and Abid Baig hailed as pioneers who continue to raise Pakistan’s flag on the world’s highest and most challenging summits. Both climbers have previously made their mark in international mountaineering, with Sirbaz Khan being the first Pakistani to summit several 8,000-meter peaks globally.
For Pakistan, and especially Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the successful summit of Tirich Mir under provincial government patronage is being seen as a symbol of resilience, potential, and vision. It combines the spirit of adventure with the promise of economic uplift through tourism, marking a new era for Pakistan’s engagement with its towering mountain ranges.
