Iran Signs Agreement to Purchase 20 Helicopters from Russia

Moscow: Iran has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with a Russian company for the purchase of 20 helicopters, a move aimed at strengthening the country’s logistics capabilities and aerial rescue operations.

According to Iran’s state news agency, the agreement was signed on Wednesday at the headquarters of the Russian company between Pir Hossein Kolivand, President of the Iranian Red Crescent Society, and Nikolai Kolesov, Director General of Russian Helicopters.

Agreement to Enhance Rescue and Logistics Capabilities

Speaking to the media in Moscow, Pir Hossein Kolivand said that Iran had reached a direct agreement with Russia to acquire 20 helicopters.

He explained that the purchase is intended to modernize and expand the Iranian Red Crescent Society’s air fleet, improving its ability to respond to emergencies and carry out humanitarian missions across the country.

“This agreement has been signed to strengthen the nation’s logistics network and aerial rescue fleet,” Kolivand said.

Initial Delivery Planned for 2027

Kolivand described the deal as a significant milestone in the history of the Iranian Red Crescent Society.

He revealed that the initial phase of the agreement covering the purchase of four helicopters has already been finalized. These aircraft are expected to be delivered before Nowruz (Persian New Year) in March 2027.

The remaining helicopters are expected to be supplied in subsequent phases under the broader agreement.

Equipped with Modern Technology

According to Iranian officials, the helicopters will feature advanced technology, including night-vision systems, enabling operations in low-light and nighttime conditions.

The enhanced capabilities are expected to improve the effectiveness of rescue teams during emergencies, natural disasters, and search-and-rescue missions.

Multiple Operational Roles

The new helicopters are expected to serve a variety of functions, including:

  • Emergency medical evacuation
  • Disaster response operations
  • Search-and-rescue missions
  • Firefighting support
  • Humanitarian assistance and relief efforts
  • Transportation and logistics operations

Officials said the versatility of the aircraft will help strengthen Iran’s emergency response infrastructure and improve access to remote regions during crises.

Strengthening Humanitarian Operations

The Iranian Red Crescent Society plays a key role in disaster management and emergency relief throughout the country. Authorities believe the expansion of its air fleet will significantly improve response times and operational efficiency during emergencies.

The acquisition comes as Iran continues efforts to modernize its humanitarian and rescue capabilities through investment in specialized equipment and aviation resources.

Conclusion

The agreement between Iran and Russia for the purchase of 20 helicopters represents a major investment in emergency response and humanitarian operations. With the first deliveries expected in 2027, the new aircraft are set to enhance Iran’s aerial rescue, medical evacuation, firefighting, and disaster-relief capabilities through the use of advanced aviation technology.
