Islamabad — Despite back-channel efforts by both current and former members of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) to open political dialogue with the government and reduce tensions with the military establishment, the party’s hardline and confrontational stance remains unchanged — largely due to Imran Khan’s own uncompromising position.

According to credible sources, several senior PTI figures — both those imprisoned and those active outside — have quietly been advocating for reconciliation, arguing that the policy of confrontation has only served to isolate the party and diminish its political relevance. Yet, their efforts have met with little success, as Imran Khan continues to firmly oppose any negotiations with ruling political parties.

Just days after senior PTI leaders incarcerated in Kot Lakhpat Jail publicly endorsed talks with the government, Imran Khan, from Adiala Jail, released a strongly worded statement rejecting this idea outright. In his message on July 8, the former prime minister declared, “The time for negotiations is over,” and instead announced plans for a nationwide protest movement beginning in August. The statement effectively shut down his party’s internal efforts, led by figures such as Shah Mahmood Qureshi, who were urging a more pragmatic approach toward normalization of political relations.

Political observers believe that as long as Imran Khan maintains his confrontational rhetoric — particularly against the military establishment — the PTI’s chances of re-emerging as a viable political force remain slim. Even within the party, key figures acknowledge privately that meaningful dialogue cannot begin until the PTI founder and its social media teams stop targeting the armed forces.

However, insiders point out that even if PTI were to soften its tone, the level of mistrust the military holds toward Imran Khan runs deep. His relentless criticism of the military’s top brass over the past three years has alienated not just the current leadership but also a significant portion of the senior command.

While Imran Khan remains PTI’s most charismatic and popular figure, his personal relations with the establishment have deteriorated to the point of near irreversibility. Analysts suggest that the party’s political revival may eventually depend on an alternative leadership — perhaps figures like Shah Mahmood Qureshi or Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi — who could prove more acceptable to the country’s power brokers.

At present, however, PTI’s entire political direction remains hostage to Imran Khan’s decisions. His refusal to entertain negotiations leaves little room for de-escalation in Pakistan’s political environment — and even less for reconciliation with the establishment.
