The Power Division has directed electricity distribution companies to take necessary steps to ensure uninterrupted power supply during the holy month of Muharram, keeping in view the expected extreme heat.

Federal Minister for Energy, Owais Leghari, in a letter to officials of distribution companies (DISCOs), stated that the sacred month of Muharram falls in July this year, during which severe heat is expected. Therefore, it is essential to take all necessary measures to facilitate the public and prevent any inconvenience during religious gatherings.

He instructed the DISCOs to take several steps to ensure uninterrupted electricity supply, particularly in areas where majlis (religious gatherings) and processions are likely to take place. He emphasized that the transmission and distribution networks in such areas should be thoroughly inspected.

He further directed that faulty equipment be repaired promptly and that emergency teams remain on high alert throughout the month, especially on the 9th and 10th of Muharram (Youm-e-Ashura).

Owais Leghari also emphasized the availability of standby generators and UPS systems at sensitive locations to ensure power supply in case of any unforeseen grid issues.

He directed that each sub-division should ensure the availability of a sufficient number of transformers and other essential equipment, with updated inventories. Coordination with local administrations and the public should also be ensured.

At the end of the letter, it was stated that the sanctity of Muharram demands that we work with full dedication and respect in the service of the public, and any negligence in this regard will be taken seriously.

Meanwhile, in Rawalpindi, five companies of the Pakistan Army and six companies of Rangers will be deployed to assist the administration and police in maintaining law and order during Muharram. Arrangements have been finalized for holding 4,374 majlis and 1,003 processions in the Rawalpindi Division.

Inspector General of Police for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Zulfiqar Hameed, said earlier this week that holding peaceful Muharram events under the current security situation is a major challenge for the police force.
