Court Grants Time to Imran Khan’s Counsel for Cross-Examination in Defamation Case Filed by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif

The Lahore Session Court has accepted the request for additional time submitted by the legal counsel representing former Prime Minister Imran Khan in the Rs. 10 billion defamation lawsuit initiated by the current Prime Minister, Shehbaz Sharif. The court has issued a written order regarding the previous hearing, confirming that Imran Khan’s lawyer will be allowed more time to conduct the cross-examination in the case.

The case dates back to 2017 when Shehbaz Sharif, who was then the Chief Minister of Punjab, filed a defamation suit against Imran Khan. The lawsuit was filed in response to allegations made by Imran Khan, in which he accused Shehbaz Sharif of offering him 10 billion rupees in an attempt to withdraw or tone down corruption cases linked to the Panama Papers scandal. Shehbaz Sharif denied the allegations and argued that the statements made by Imran Khan damaged his political reputation and personal credibility. He subsequently filed the case under Pakistan’s defamation laws seeking compensation of Rs. 10 billion.

The matter has seen a series of delays over the years, largely due to changes in political situations, shifting legal teams, security concerns, and procedural factors. With both individuals having served as Prime Minister of Pakistan at different times, the case has taken on considerable political significance, being viewed as a high-profile symbol of political rivalry and mistrust within Pakistan’s political landscape.

During the latest hearing, Imran Khan’s legal team requested the court to grant a postponement to prepare for the cross-examination phase, citing the need for access to certain documents and time to strategize. The court, while acknowledging that the right to a fair defense and complete legal preparation must be ensured, accepted the request and granted the additional time. Judge Yelmaz Ghani issued the written order confirming the extension.

The court, however, also instructed both parties to ensure that the proceedings do not face unnecessary delays going forward. The judge emphasized that the case has already been pending for several years and should now move toward a conclusion with a consistent schedule and commitment from both sides.

Legal analysts note that the defamation case is not merely a legal dispute but also reflects the broader tensions between the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). Both parties continue to accuse each other of misuse of power, political victimization, and disinformation. The statements and court outcomes related to this case have been frequently used in political speeches, media interviews, and public gatherings by leaders from both sides to reinforce their respective political positions.

Since his ouster from office in 2022, Imran Khan has been facing multiple legal challenges across the country, ranging from allegations linked to the Toshakhana case to charges under anti-terrorism and anti-corruption laws. His legal team is managing a wide array of court appearances and filings, which has contributed to requests for time extensions in many cases, including the ongoing defamation suit.

On the other hand, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has maintained that the lawsuit is an important step toward re-establishing the value of truth in political discourse. He has repeatedly stated that false allegations, if left unchallenged, erode public trust in democratic systems and institutions. His party leadership argues that the legal system must hold political leaders accountable for statements that they cannot substantiate with evidence.

The next hearing is expected to focus on the continuation of cross-examination, depending on the preparedness of Imran Khan’s legal team. The court has indicated that it may consider setting a tighter schedule to prevent further delays in the proceedings. The outcome of the case could potentially influence political narratives in the coming months, particularly if it moves toward final arguments.
