Attack on North Waziristan Assistant Commissioner’s Vehicle in Bannu Leaves Three Dead, Including Two Police Officers

A tragic incident unfolded in Bannu on Tuesday when armed assailants targeted the vehicle of the Assistant Commissioner (AC) of North Waziristan, resulting in the deaths of three individuals, including two police officers assigned to the official security detail. The attack has once again highlighted the deteriorating security situation in parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, particularly in districts bordering the tribal region.

According to police officials, the attack occurred on Miranshah Road near the Flour Mills area, a location that has witnessed sporadic militant activity in the past. The AC’s convoy was reportedly traveling toward a routine official engagement when unidentified gunmen opened fire on the police escort vehicle accompanying the Assistant Commissioner’s car. The targeted attack appeared to be pre-planned, with the assailants positioned strategically to ambush the security team.

Initial reports from law enforcement agencies confirmed that two police constables were killed on the spot due to heavy gunfire. A third individual, also said to be part of the convoy, succumbed to fatal injuries shortly afterward. Two more police officers sustained serious bullet wounds and were rushed to the district headquarters hospital for emergency treatment. Their condition remains critical, according to hospital sources.

In a disturbing detail, the police revealed that the assailants not only attacked the officers but also seized weapons from the injured policemen before fleeing the scene. This tactic—commonly associated with militant groups operating in the region—suggests that the attackers were well-trained and familiar with police protocols. The ability to retrieve weapons during the assault and escape without immediate interception has raised concerns regarding the sophistication and organization of the culprits.

Assistant Commissioner Bannu confirmed the incident to the media, stating that the vehicle belonging to the AC of North Waziristan, Shah Wali, was directly targeted in the attack. He further stated that the driver and the two police officers were initially injured during the firing. However, subsequent updates indicated that the injuries proved fatal for the two policemen and one additional member of the team.

The AC Bannu also expressed deep concern over the fact that communication with Assistant Commissioner North Waziristan, Shah Wali, has been lost since the attack, creating further anxiety within administrative circles. Authorities are still trying to determine whether Shah Wali was inside the vehicle at the time of the incident or if he had been separated from the convoy for official reasons. Police and district administration officials have begun efforts to trace his whereabouts.

Following the attack, law enforcement agencies initiated a massive search operation in and around the Miranshah Road area. Checkpoints were tightened, and police teams, along with other security personnel, cordoned off entry and exit routes to prevent the suspects from escaping. Despite these measures, no arrests have been reported so far. Investigators are currently analyzing CCTV footage from nearby locations and interviewing eyewitnesses to gather information on the attackers’ movements.

The incident has sparked widespread concern among local residents and government officials alike. Bannu, which has previously experienced periods of instability due to its proximity to North Waziristan, had recently shown signs of improving security. However, the latest attack has renewed fears of resurgence in militant activity. Analysts point out that police personnel deployed for the protection of administrative officers have become increasingly vulnerable to such targeted attacks, particularly in areas that serve as transit routes for militants.

Senior police officials have condemned the assault, vowing to bring the perpetrators to justice. They emphasized that attacks on government officials and security personnel represent an attempt to undermine the state’s authority and intimidate civil institutions. The provincial administration has reportedly sought a detailed report on the incident and is expected to review security arrangements for civil officers serving in sensitive regions.

Local communities have also expressed grief over the deaths of the police officers, acknowledging their role as frontline defenders who routinely risk their lives to safeguard public officials and citizens. Condolence messages from public representatives and tribal elders have praised the bravery of the fallen officers, while also calling for stronger measures to counter militant threats.
