Government Faces Criticism Over Petrol Price Hike Despite Falling Costs
Islamabad: The federal government is facing public criticism after a significant increase in petrol prices, despite a reported decrease in the ex-refinery cost of fuel. Recent documents reveal that while the actual cost of petrol dropped, consumers were still burdened with a substantial price hike.
Decrease in Petrol Cost, But Price Increased
According to official documents, the ex-refinery price of petrol—which reflects the base cost—decreased by Rs. 13.58 per liter between March 28 and April 3. This indicates that global or supply-side factors had made petrol cheaper during this period.
However, despite this reduction, the government had initially increased the petrol price by Rs. 137.24 per liter in one go, causing widespread concern among the public. Following strong reactions, the Prime Minister later announced a reduction of Rs. 80 per liter, bringing the final petrol price down to Rs. 378.41 per liter.
Breakdown of Pricing
The documents further reveal that after including customs duty and other charges, the ex-refinery cost of petrol currently stands at Rs. 247.15 per liter. Previously, on March 28, the ex-refinery price was Rs. 284.85 per liter, which has now decreased to Rs. 271.27 per liter.
This discrepancy between falling base costs and rising consumer prices has raised questions about the taxation structure and additional levies imposed on petroleum products.
Price Trend Over Recent Weeks
Despite the recent short-term decrease, data shows that the ex-refinery price has increased by Rs. 33.45 per liter since March 14, indicating fluctuations in the fuel market over the past few weeks.
Experts suggest that petrol prices in Pakistan are influenced by multiple factors, including international oil prices, exchange rates, government taxes, and petroleum levies. Even when base prices fall, adjustments in taxes or duties can lead to higher prices for consumers.
Public Reaction and Concerns
The sharp increase in petrol prices, followed by a partial rollback, has led to confusion and frustration among citizens. Many people have questioned why the benefit of reduced costs was not fully passed on to consumers.
Rising fuel prices have a direct impact on the cost of living, as they influence transportation fares, food prices, and overall inflation. For daily wage earners and middle-income households, such fluctuations create additional financial pressure.
Government’s Position
While the government has not provided a detailed public explanation for the pricing decisions, officials often argue that taxes on petroleum products are necessary to meet fiscal targets and manage the national budget.
Petroleum levies and duties are considered a major source of revenue, especially in times of economic challenges. However, critics argue that excessive reliance on such taxes places an unfair burden on the general public.
Economic Implications
Economists warn that inconsistent fuel pricing policies can affect market stability and business confidence. Sudden increases in fuel costs can disrupt supply chains, increase production costs, and slow down economic activity.
They recommend greater transparency in pricing mechanisms and a more balanced approach that considers both government revenue needs and public affordability.
Conclusion
The recent petrol price adjustments highlight the complex dynamics of fuel pricing in Pakistan. While a decrease in ex-refinery costs suggested potential relief for consumers, the actual price hike has sparked debate and criticism.
