Mumbai Receives Nearly 200mm of Rain in Hours, Torrential Downpour Disrupts Daily Life Across Maharashtra
MUMBAI: Torrential monsoon rains battered India’s financial capital, Mumbai, bringing daily life to a standstill after nearly 200 millimeters of rainfall was recorded in several parts of the city within just 12 hours. The intense downpour triggered widespread flooding, damaged infrastructure, disrupted transportation, and affected thousands of residents across Maharashtra.
According to Indian media reports, heavy rain lashed Mumbai throughout the day, inundating low-lying neighborhoods and causing severe waterlogging on major roads. The relentless rainfall led to flood-like conditions in several parts of the city, forcing commuters to face significant delays while disrupting normal business and daily activities.
Authorities reported that numerous roads became impassable after being submerged under rainwater, while several streets suffered structural damage due to the continuous rainfall. In some locations, sections of roads caved in, creating hazardous conditions for motorists and pedestrians alike.
The heavy rains also affected Mumbai’s suburban railway network, one of the busiest commuter rail systems in the world. Train services experienced delays and disruptions as water accumulated on tracks, leaving thousands of passengers stranded during peak travel hours.
In addition to transportation problems, strong winds and heavy rainfall caused damage to trees and residential buildings in various neighborhoods. Emergency response teams were deployed to clear fallen trees, restore traffic movement, and respond to reports of localized flooding.
The impact of the monsoon extended beyond Mumbai, with neighboring districts including Thane, Palghar, Navi Mumbai, and Pune also experiencing severe weather conditions. Continuous rainfall flooded roads and residential areas, significantly disrupting normal life across the region.
According to media reports, Pune witnessed multiple landslide incidents following the persistent rainfall. The landslides damaged connecting roads and affected transportation links, making it difficult for residents to travel between several localities. Local authorities launched rescue operations and evacuated people from flood-prone and landslide-affected areas to safer locations.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) released detailed rainfall statistics showing the intensity of the downpour. Between 8:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m., Mumbai’s eastern suburbs recorded an average rainfall of 186 millimeters, while the western suburbs received 168 millimeters. The Island City area recorded approximately 129 millimeters of rainfall during the same period.
Among the worst-hit locations was Vikhroli West in the eastern suburbs, where more than 260 millimeters of rain fell within just 12 hours. Several other areas, including Powai, Bhandup, Malad, Kandivali, Jogeshwari, and Andheri, recorded rainfall exceeding 210 millimeters, highlighting the widespread nature of the weather system.
Municipal authorities activated emergency control rooms and deployed additional personnel to monitor water levels, clear blocked drainage systems, and assist residents in affected neighborhoods. Pumping stations were also operated continuously to remove accumulated rainwater from flooded roads and residential areas.
Weather officials warned that more rain could occur in the coming days as the southwest monsoon remains active over Maharashtra. Residents have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel, stay away from waterlogged areas, and follow instructions issued by local disaster management authorities.
Mumbai experiences heavy rainfall every year during the monsoon season, but intense cloudbursts within a short period often overwhelm the city’s drainage infrastructure, leading to severe flooding and widespread disruption. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely while emergency teams remain on high alert to respond to any further weather-related incidents.
