In a continued effort to enhance online safety, Meta has announced a new set of features on Instagram aimed at protecting underage users from harmful or inappropriate interactions on the platform.

The announcement was made via an official blog post, where the company detailed the steps being taken to make Instagram a safer and more transparent place for teenagers.

Improved Direct Messaging Controls

One of the key updates focuses on Direct Messages (DMs) — a common channel where inappropriate or suspicious activity can occur.

Meta revealed that:

• Underage users (ages 13 to 17) will now be able to view more context about incoming messages.
• Users will see when a sender joined Instagram, helping identify suspicious or newly created accounts.
• There will be clear visual warnings in new chats if a sender may be engaging in suspicious behavior.

Additionally, new “block” and “report” options are being introduced directly within chats. These updates will allow users to:

• Block and report suspicious accounts more easily
• Take action immediately upon receiving a message, without needing to navigate through settings

Increased Transparency and Control

Meta emphasized that these tools empower young users to:

• Stay in control of their private conversations
• Quickly detect potential scams, harassment, or grooming behavior
• Make informed decisions about who they engage with online

The year of Instagram account creation will now be visible in messages, making it easier to spot fake or recently created accounts often used for spam or predatory behavior.

Safety Features to Expand Beyond Instagram

While these messaging updates are currently exclusive to Instagram, Meta stated that it plans to bring similar features to Facebook Messenger in the future.

Moreover, new “Safety and Location Notices” — alerts that notify users about potential risks or security issues — will be available on both Instagram and Facebook.

Teen Accounts: Built with Protection in Mind

Meta classifies users aged 13 to 17 as “teen accounts” and automatically applies stricter privacy and safety settings. This includes:

• Limiting who can send messages or follow them
• Preventing adult strangers from initiating conversations
• Reducing exposure to potentially harmful content

The latest update is part of Meta’s broader push to create age-appropriate digital spaces and respond to growing global concerns about teen mental health and online safety.
