Extremely High Flood Levels in River Chenab: Authorities Brace for Possible Breaches
Lahore/Multan: The River Chenab has swelled to extremely high flood levels at Head Trimmu, where the inflow and outflow have reached a staggering 479,743 cusecs, raising alarms for downstream districts.
According to the Flood Forecasting Division (FFD), water levels are fluctuating at different barrages. At Head Khanki and Qadirabad, water levels have decreased to medium flood levels. Meanwhile, at Head Panjnad, inflows have increased but the situation remains under control for now.
The most critical situation has emerged at Head Trimmu, where both inflow and outflow volumes have crossed the 479,000 cusec mark. Officials fear that this surge may continue to rise, posing a direct threat to surrounding settlements and agricultural lands.
River Ravi and Sutlej Also Under Pressure
While Chenab remains the most concerning, the River Ravi is also experiencing alarming flows. At Head Balloki, water has receded slightly but remains at an extremely high flood stage with 175,000 cusecs. At Shahdara, however, the river is at a medium flood level, recording inflows and outflows of 67,900 cusecs.
The River Sutlej is facing similar challenges. Though data from Ganda Singh Wala could not be received, reports confirm that at Head Sulemanki, water levels are at a high flood stage, with flows recorded at 134,000 cusecs. This situation continues to place vulnerable communities at risk, especially those living in low-lying areas near the riverbanks.
PDMA Issues High Alert
Irfan Ali Kathia, Director General of the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), warned that the situation could intensify further. He revealed that flood peaks of up to 900,000 cusecs may hit Head Trimmu today.
He further added that at Head Muhammadwala, authorities are expecting a flow of 800,000 cusecs. In extreme circumstances, controlled breaches (deliberate cuts) may have to be created at Trimmu or Muhammadwala to safeguard larger populations and critical infrastructure.
Kathia stated, “If the situation worsens at Sadhnai or Muhammadwala, we may be forced to make breaches. These are difficult decisions, but they are necessary to divert floodwaters and prevent catastrophic damage.”
Uncertainty Over Indian Water Releases
Another pressing concern raised by PDMA is the lack of official communication from India regarding water discharges from Salal Dam. This dam, located about 78 kilometers upstream from Head Marala, significantly influences water flows into Pakistan.
Kathia confirmed that without verified data from Indian authorities, it is difficult to forecast the exact scale of inflows at Head Marala. “We cannot confirm how much water will arrive at Head Marala in the coming days,” he said, urging residents in vulnerable areas to remain on alert.
Possible Humanitarian Consequences
If flood peaks reach projected levels, thousands of families in Punjab’s floodplains may face displacement. Agricultural lands along the Chenab, Ravi, and Sutlej rivers could be submerged, damaging standing crops of rice, maize, and sugarcane.
Livestock is also at risk, as herders may not have sufficient time or resources to move animals to safer locations. The memory of the devastating 2014 floods in Chenab still lingers in people’s minds, when thousands of acres of fertile land were destroyed.
Villagers in Jhang, Multan, and Muzaffargarh districts have already begun moving to safer ground with their belongings, fearing that the rising waters may inundate their homes.
Government Preparedness and Relief Efforts
The Punjab government, under PDMA’s direction, has put all district administrations on high alert. Commissioners and deputy commissioners have been instructed to remain in the field, monitor embankments, and ensure the availability of relief camps and medical facilities.
Rescue 1122 teams, along with Army and civil defense volunteers, are being deployed to flood-prone regions. Sandbags are being placed along vulnerable embankments to strengthen river defenses.
Authorities have also requested citizens to stay away from riverbanks and avoid unnecessary travel near flood-hit areas. Warnings are being broadcast via local mosques, community radios, and mobile alerts to ensure maximum outreach.
Broader Context: Climate and Water Management
Pakistan’s rivers are once again testing the resilience of its disaster management system. With the monsoon season intensifying due to climate change, extreme rainfall and glacial melt are increasing the risk of riverine floods.
Experts note that while Pakistan faces recurring floods almost every year, structural weaknesses—such as inadequate embankments, poor early-warning systems, and uncoordinated cross-border water data sharing—exacerbate the damage.
The Indus Waters Treaty obliges India to share certain data, but delays and incomplete information often leave Pakistan struggling to prepare adequately. This year’s situation once again highlights the urgent need for stronger bilateral mechanisms on water management.
Conclusion
The River Chenab at Head Trimmu remains the epicenter of Pakistan’s flood crisis, with extremely high levels of water threatening lives, property, and agriculture. The possibility of controlled breaches underscores the gravity of the threat.
As Punjab braces for the onslaught of floodwaters, the government and humanitarian agencies face the daunting challenge of protecting vulnerable populations while minimizing economic losses.
Whether the situation escalates into a full-scale disaster depends not only on weather patterns and upstream releases from India but also on the speed and effectiveness of Pakistan’s disaster response.
For now, the people of Chenab’s floodplains wait anxiously, hoping that the rivers will spare their homes and livelihoods.
