Sukkur (Report by Danish Rajput): In anticipation of potentially heavy rainfall in Sukkur, Mayor Arslan Islam Shaikh has taken proactive steps to ensure the city’s preparedness. Accompanied by his advisor Agha Bashir Tarin, the mayor visited the Miyani Disposal Station and later addressed a press conference outlining the government’s monsoon contingency plans.
Mayor Shaikh stated that this year’s rainfall is expected to exceed normal levels, prompting the city administration to impose a rain emergency across Sukkur. He urged citizens to remain cautious during the rains and avoid unnecessary outdoor movement. He warned that electric poles and trees may pose serious hazards, and advised parents to keep children away from open manholes, many of which are without covers due to theft.
He highlighted that 42 disposal stations in the city have been fully upgraded and are now operational, with generators on standby at each station. Additionally, all stormwater drains and underground drainage systems have been cleaned in advance of the rains.
The mayor added that dewatering machines have been installed at 31 vulnerable locations, including Old Sukkur, and that all officers and municipal staff leave has been canceled to ensure swift emergency response.
He identified the Ghanta Ghar area as extremely sensitive, warning that any rainfall before July 21 could lead to serious issues, although the situation is expected to be more manageable if rains occur after that date.
Expressing concern over encroachments on drainage channels, Mayor Shaikh informed that a letter has been sent to the Chief Secretary Sindh, and efforts are being made to relocate encroachers in order to clear the drains.
The mayor also criticized the performance of the Meteorological Department, claiming that last year’s predictions were inaccurate and noting that the department still lacks modern technology necessary for accurate forecasts
