Trump Announces Withdrawal from UN and Dozens of International Organizations, Ends US Funding

US President Donald Trump has announced that the United States will withdraw from 66 international organizations, including key United Nations (UN) bodies, and will end all financial support to them.

Trump stated on Wednesday that the US would pull out of several international and UN organizations, including a major environmental agreement and a UN agency that works on gender equality and women’s empowerment. According to him, these organizations act against US national interests.

Among the bodies from which the US is withdrawing is UN Women, which promotes gender equality and empowers women globally. The US is also pulling out from the UN Population Fund (UNFPA), which focuses on family planning and maternal and child health in more than 150 countries. Last year, the US had already reduced its funding to UNFPA.

The White House released a list of 35 organizations not part of the UN, highlighting the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), National Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance, and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) as notable examples.

Additionally, the US will withdraw from 31 UN agencies, including the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the UN Democracy Fund, and UNFPA. Notably, the US did not participate in last year’s annual UN climate conference for the first time in three decades.

According to the British news agency, Trump’s decision reflects his long-standing distrust of multilateral institutions, especially the UN. He has frequently questioned their effectiveness, costs, and accountability, arguing that these organizations often fail to serve American interests.

The UN is expected to issue an official response to the announcement soon. Since the start of his second term in January last year, Trump had already withdrawn the US from the World Health Organization (WHO), the Paris Climate Agreement, and the UN Human Rights Council.

This move marks another significant step in Trump’s efforts to reduce US engagement with global institutions and prioritize unilateral national policy decisions over multilateral cooperation.
