Gaza / Tel Aviv: The ongoing war in Gaza witnessed another deadly escalation as Hamas’ armed wing, the Al-Qassam Brigades, claimed to have carried out a surprise commando-style raid and a suicide attack on Israeli forces in the Khan Younis sector, allegedly inflicting heavy casualties. The Israeli military, however, disputed these claims, saying its forces repelled the assault and killed several militants in the process.

According to a statement released by Al-Qassam Brigades, resistance fighters launched a sudden raid on a newly established Israeli military position in southeastern Khan Younis. The group claimed that its fighters engaged Israeli troops at close range, using light weapons, hand grenades, and sniper fire. A sniper reportedly targeted the commander of an Israeli Merkava tank.

The militants further alleged that during the confrontation, one fighter carried out a suicide bombing in the midst of an Israeli reinforcement unit, causing “multiple deaths and injuries.” The group said that the operation also involved the use of mortar shells, anti-tank rounds, and improvised explosive devices (IEDs), leading to an hours-long battle before fighters safely withdrew. However, the statement did not provide verified casualty figures.

Meanwhile, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) presented a starkly different account. In its statement, the army said around 15 Hamas fighters attempted to breach a defensive position manned by the Kfir Brigade’s Nachshon Battalion, armed with machine guns and anti-tank weapons. The IDF claimed its troops, supported by airstrikes, thwarted the attack, killing nearly 10 Palestinian militants.

The IDF acknowledged that during the battle, one soldier from the 90th Battalion sustained serious injuries, while two others were lightly wounded. The military emphasized that the attempted breach had been foiled and that Israeli positions remained intact.

This incident underscores the intensifying ground warfare in Khan Younis, a strategic southern city of Gaza that has been a major battleground for weeks. Hamas has increasingly relied on guerrilla tactics, ambushes, and suicide attacks to counter Israel’s superior firepower, while Israel continues to deploy ground troops, tanks, and air support to dismantle Hamas’ military infrastructure.

Military analysts note that such conflicting casualty claims are common in wartime. While Hamas seeks to project strength and resilience through reports of Israeli losses, the IDF attempts to highlight its battlefield successes and minimize its vulnerabilities. With independent verification nearly impossible due to the active conflict and restricted access for international observers, the true scale of losses on either side remains unclear.

The clash in Khan Younis highlights the brutal and close-quarters nature of fighting inside Gaza, where urban landscapes and tunnel networks give Hamas an advantage for hit-and-run operations, while Israeli forces depend on overwhelming firepower to suppress resistance.
