Pakistan and Iran Sign Multiple MoUs and Agreements, Set Ambitious $10 Billion Trade Target

In a significant step towards strengthening bilateral relations, Pakistan and Iran have exchanged multiple agreements and memorandums of understanding (MoUs), aiming to boost trade, cooperation, and cultural ties across various sectors. The documents were exchanged during an official visit by a high-level Iranian delegation, symbolizing a renewed commitment by both nations to elevate their multifaceted partnership.

Among the MoUs exchanged, one was signed between Iran’s Minister of Commerce and Pakistan’s Minister for Food Security. This agreement is expected to enhance bilateral cooperation in the agriculture and food sectors, focusing on ensuring sustainable food security for both nations. Both sides stressed the need for improved collaboration in food supply chains, research, and food standardization to address growing regional food demands.

Another important MoU was exchanged between Pakistan’s Federal Minister Khalid Magsi and the Iranian Ambassador to Pakistan, Reza Amiri-Moghaddam. The understanding aimed at enhancing mutual coordination in infrastructural development and border management. This exchange highlights both countries’ focus on improving cross-border trade mechanisms, transportation logistics, and fostering security cooperation in border regions.

A separate MoU was also exchanged between the Minister of State for Finance and Railways from Pakistan and the Iranian Foreign Minister. The two parties emphasized upgrading rail connectivity between the two countries, facilitating trade routes, and initiating joint infrastructure projects that could connect landlocked Central Asian states through Pakistan and Iran.

In the field of information technology, another MoU was signed between Pakistan’s Federal Minister for IT and Telecommunication, Shaza Fatima Khawaja, and her Iranian counterpart. The agreement outlines cooperation in digital development, knowledge exchange, cybersecurity, and IT startups. Both countries recognize the digital economy as a powerful tool to accelerate national development and innovation-driven growth.

Additionally, a cultural cooperation MoU was exchanged to deepen ties in arts, media, heritage preservation, and educational exchanges. The agreement is aimed at increasing people-to-people contact, promoting shared Islamic heritage, and encouraging collaboration between cultural institutions in both countries.

Cooperation in maritime affairs and climate change was also formalized through two separate MoUs. These documents call for collaborative efforts in marine research, maritime safety, sustainable fisheries, and climate resilience strategies. Both sides agreed to establish working groups to focus on these sectors in line with global climate and environmental standards.

A significant MoU on law and justice as well as internal security was also exchanged between relevant ministries. This document seeks to improve mutual legal assistance, intelligence-sharing on counterterrorism, and capacity-building for law enforcement personnel. It reflects both countries’ shared commitment to regional peace and combating transnational crimes.

Another MoU was signed regarding cooperation in aviation services. The agreement will help streamline flight operations, improve direct air connectivity, and encourage both business and religious tourism. Better air services are expected to make pilgrimages, especially to Iranian religious sites, more accessible for Pakistani citizens.

The two sides also signed MoUs focusing on product standardization and tourism development. These will help harmonize the quality of goods traded between both nations and jointly promote historical and religious tourism. A special focus was placed on boosting public services in border areas to support local communities and trade facilitation.

In a joint press conference alongside Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif underscored the significance of these agreements and said that they are rooted in shared values, mutual respect, and long-standing brotherly relations between the two Islamic nations.

“We have signed numerous MoUs, and it is our earnest desire that these memorandums soon transform into formal agreements,” the Prime Minister stated. “Both Pakistan and Iran have set an ambitious goal to elevate bilateral trade to 10 billion U.S. dollars in the coming years. We believe this target is not only realistic but necessary for regional growth and prosperity.”

The Prime Minister also praised the leadership of President Raisi and acknowledged Iran’s strategic importance in the region. He noted that the visit reflects Iran’s deep interest in expanding relations with its neighbors, particularly Pakistan, and called for unity among Muslim countries to address global challenges.

President Ebrahim Raisi, in his remarks, affirmed Iran’s willingness to support Pakistan in various sectors, from energy and trade to science and technology. He emphasized regional cooperation and appreciated Pakistan’s warm hospitality and the productive meetings held during the visit.

Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to regular high-level engagements, institutional dialogue, and implementation of the signed MoUs through designated committees. They also emphasized the need to resist external pressures and prioritize regional autonomy and self-reliance.

The flurry of agreements between the two neighboring countries comes at a critical time when the region is undergoing political shifts and economic realignments. With these steps, Pakistan and Iran signal their readiness to play a proactive role in shaping regional connectivity, economic development, and cultural exchange.

By aiming to elevate trade volume from the current modest levels to $10 billion, both countries are seeking to unlock the vast potential that exists in agriculture, energy, transportation, tourism, and digital economy sectors. If implemented effectively, these MoUs could significantly transform the bilateral relationship and contribute to peace and prosperity across South and West Asia.
