Melbourne: The curator of the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) has expressed shock and disappointment following the early conclusion of the Boxing Day Test between England and Australia, which ended in just two days, sparking intense debate over the pitch conditions.

Matthew Page, the MCG curator, spoke to the media alongside MCC Chief Executive Stuart Fox, stating that he was “extremely surprised” by how quickly the match ended. “I have never been part of a Test match like this, and I hope never to be again,” he said, highlighting that the pitch did not allow the usual balance between bat and ball over the fourth and fifth days, which is typically expected.

Chief Executive Stuart Fox defended Page, emphasizing his expertise and contribution over the past eight years. “Matthew Page is one of the country’s finest curators. He and his team worked excellently, and while he is disappointed with the match ending early, he has accepted responsibility,” Fox added.

The premature conclusion of the match has had significant financial repercussions. Estimates suggest Cricket Australia suffered over $10 million in revenue losses, as around 90,000 spectators were expected to attend on the third day. Tickets for the third and fourth days are now being automatically refunded to fans, according to Australian media reports.

This incident follows a similar situation at the Perth Test, which also ended in just two days, resulting in a $4 million loss for Cricket Australia. The repeated early finishes have intensified scrutiny on pitch preparation and its impact on the game and revenue.
