The federal government has announced a package of special concessions for exporters facing delays in shipments to Gulf countries, in a move aimed at easing financial pressure and supporting Pakistan’s export sector. Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Junaid Anwar made the announcement in Karachi, highlighting a series of reductions in port-related charges and operational improvements.

According to the minister, storage charges at Karachi Port Trust (KPT) terminals will be reduced by 25 to 50 percent. This relief specifically targets exporters whose shipments to Gulf destinations have been delayed, offering them much-needed financial support amid ongoing logistical challenges. The decision is expected to benefit a wide range of exporters, particularly those dealing in perishable and time-sensitive goods.

Junaid Anwar stated that the relief measures will also apply to cargo containers that are currently stuck at ports. By lowering storage costs, the government aims to reduce the financial burden on exporters who have been affected by shipment delays. He emphasized that these اقدامات are part of broader efforts to stabilize export operations and maintain trade flow despite disruptions.

The minister further explained that different terminals will offer varying levels of concessions over specified periods. At KPT terminals, a 50 percent waiver on storage charges will be applicable from March 1 to March 20. Similarly, at Karachi International Container Terminal (KICT), exporters will receive a 50 percent discount from March 1 to March 10. At South Asia Pakistan Terminal (SAPT), a 25 percent reduction in storage charges will be implemented from March 11 to March 31.

These targeted concessions are designed to provide immediate relief while ensuring that port operations remain efficient and responsive to the needs of the business community. The government believes that such measures will help restore confidence among exporters and encourage continued trade with Gulf markets, which remain a key destination for Pakistani goods.

In addition to financial relief, the minister noted that steps are being taken to address underlying logistical issues. Efforts are underway to improve cargo clearance processes, reduce bottlenecks, and enhance coordination among port authorities and shipping lines. These improvements aim to prevent future delays and ensure smoother handling of shipments.

Junaid Anwar also praised the efforts of KPT Chairman Rear Admiral Shahid Ahmed, acknowledging his role in implementing reforms and improving port management. He stressed that aligning port operations with modern trade requirements is essential for boosting Pakistan’s competitiveness in international markets.

The announcement comes at a time when exporters have been facing multiple challenges, including rising costs, global supply chain disruptions, and delays in shipment handling. The Gulf region, being one of Pakistan’s major export destinations, holds significant importance for the country’s trade and economic stability.
