Tehran/ Moscow – In a significant diplomatic development, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Russian President Vladimir Putin held a telephone conversation to discuss bilateral ties and regional security, with a particular focus on Iran’s nuclear energy program. The discussion comes at a time of heightened global scrutiny over Tehran’s nuclear ambitions and amid shifting geopolitical dynamics in the Middle East and beyond.

According to Iranian state media, President Pezeshkian reiterated that Iran has no intention of pursuing nuclear weapons, emphasizing that the country’s nuclear activities are strictly aimed at peaceful energy production and scientific advancement. He reassured Moscow that Tehran remains committed to the principles of the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) while defending Iran’s right to develop civilian nuclear technology.

On his part, President Putin strongly underlined that Iran possesses a fundamental right to enrich uranium for peaceful purposes. He criticized Western powers for what he described as a “double standard” in nuclear policy, where some countries are allowed to advance their programs while others face restrictions and sanctions. The Russian leader added that supporting Iran’s peaceful nuclear development is consistent with international law and necessary for maintaining balance in global energy security.

The two leaders also discussed their upcoming meeting at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit, where broader issues of regional cooperation, economic integration, and security will be on the agenda. The SCO, in which Iran recently gained full membership, serves as a strategic platform for Moscow and Tehran to align their positions against Western-dominated institutions.

In addition, both presidents touched upon the outcomes of the Russia–U.S. summit in Alaska, signaling that Tehran and Moscow are closely monitoring Washington’s global strategic moves. Analysts view this as part of a broader Russia–Iran coordination effort to counter U.S. influence in the Middle East, Central Asia, and beyond.

The call highlights the deepening ties between Russia and Iran, who in recent years have expanded cooperation in energy, defense, and trade. With Iran under heavy U.S. and European sanctions, Moscow has emerged as a critical ally, helping Tehran navigate global isolation while simultaneously strengthening its own strategic depth in the region.

Observers note that the emphasis on uranium enrichment is likely to provoke concern in Western capitals, where skepticism about Iran’s nuclear intentions remains high. The United States and European Union have repeatedly expressed doubts over Iran’s assurances of peaceful intent, especially in light of the collapse of the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) following Washington’s withdrawal in 2018.

Nevertheless, the renewed Moscow–Tehran understanding may embolden Iran to pursue its nuclear program more assertively, with Russia providing diplomatic cover on the international stage. Experts suggest that this could complicate future negotiations aimed at reviving the nuclear deal or introducing new frameworks for nuclear security in the Middle East.

For now, both sides appear determined to deepen strategic cooperation, framing Iran’s nuclear energy program as a sovereign right rather than a threat.
