ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari has described July 5, 1977, as the darkest day in Pakistan’s democratic history, saying it marked the overthrow of the people’s mandate, the Constitution, and the parliamentary democratic system. On the 49th anniversary of the military takeover, he reaffirmed his party’s commitment to defending constitutional supremacy and democratic values.

In a statement issued on the occasion, Bilawal said the events of July 5, 1977, represented a serious setback to Pakistan’s democratic journey. He said the day remains a painful reminder of the interruption of constitutional governance and the weakening of democratic institutions.

“July 5, 1977, is the darkest day in Pakistan’s democratic history,” Bilawal said. “It was the day when the people’s mandate, the Constitution, and parliamentary democracy were overthrown.”

The PPP chairman said the imposition of military rule was intended to silence the voice of the people, but history proved that democratic ideals could not be permanently suppressed.

He paid tribute to Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, the founder of the Pakistan Peoples Party, as well as Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto, and countless democracy activists who, according to him, sacrificed their lives and endured hardships in the struggle for constitutional rule.

“Those who believed dictatorship could suppress the will of the people were proven wrong,” Bilawal said. “The sacrifices of Shaheed Bhutto, Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto, and countless pro-democracy workers demonstrated that truth and the sovereignty of the people can never be defeated.”

Bilawal emphasized that despite the passage of 49 years, his party remains firmly committed to protecting Pakistan’s constitutional framework and democratic institutions.

“Even after 49 years, our commitment remains unchanged,” he said. “We will defend the supremacy of the Constitution at all costs and continue to safeguard the sanctity of the vote, parliamentary democracy, and the people’s right to govern.”

The PPP chairman stressed that democracy is built upon constitutional supremacy, the rule of law, independent institutions, and respect for the public mandate. He said preserving these principles is essential for Pakistan’s political stability and long-term development.

Bilawal further stated that honoring the sacrifices made by democratic leaders and activists requires a continued commitment to democratic values rather than authoritarian practices.

“The true tribute to our martyrs is to reject every shadow of hatred and dictatorship while continuing to build a united, democratic, and progressive Pakistan,” he said.

He called for strengthening democratic institutions through constitutional means and urged all stakeholders to uphold democratic traditions for the country’s future.
