Islamabad: All direct and indirect channels of communication between Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and the establishment have now been completely shut down.

According to senior PTI sources, even members of the federal cabinet who previously maintained informal or backchannel contacts with PTI are no longer in touch with the party. This deadlock has emerged at a time when the issue has taken on extraordinary political significance for PTI.

PTI sources told The News that the primary reasons for the breakdown in communication are the party’s continued protest politics and its aggressive public campaigns against state institutions.

A senior party leader, speaking on condition of anonymity, said that protest politics and negotiations cannot go hand in hand. “You cannot run protest movements, use harsh language against the establishment, and at the same time expect negotiations. That is simply not possible.”

According to sources, the party leadership has largely accepted that due to directives from the incarcerated founding chairman Imran Khan, the path to negotiations is currently closed. As a result, there is growing anxiety within the party about how far the February 8 protest can produce any different outcome for PTI and its jailed leadership.

In this context, PTI has announced peaceful protests across the country on February 8. Workers have been instructed to hold symbolic demonstrations at the district and union council levels. In Punjab, in particular, large-scale central protests have been discouraged. However, expectations even within the party remain limited.

PTI sources acknowledged that any effective or meaningful protest activity is likely to remain largely confined to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, while the chances of active protests in Punjab are extremely low given the current political and administrative environment.

A senior party source said the leadership itself understands that the chances of any major breakthrough or revolutionary outcome are very slim. The February 8 protest is being viewed not as a decisive confrontation, but merely as a show of political presence.

According to sources, after the protests, the opposition alliance—led by Mahmood Khan Achakzai and Allama Raja Nasir Abbas—may push for negotiations rather than continued protests. However, any potential talks would require clear and defined conditions.

PTI sources who previously had access to establishment circles said it has been conveyed in unequivocal terms that no dialogue will take place unless confrontational politics is brought to an end.

One source said the message is absolutely clear: the current political system must continue, and under no circumstances will the existing setup be allowed to be endangered, nor will any political movement be permitted that could destabilize the economy.

According to sources, the country’s economic situation has severely narrowed the space for political agitation.

A source familiar with previous contacts stated that at this stage, no political activity or movement will be acceptable if it harms economic stability. In light of these restrictions and realities, PTI’s future political direction after February 8 appears uncertain. Meanwhile, internal debate continues within the party over how viable prolonged confrontational politics can be without negotiations, organizational strength, and mass public mobilization.
