The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has explained the procedure for changing a name on a Computerised National Identity Card (CNIC), outlining the required documents, application steps, fees, and delivery timelines.

According to NADRA, applicants must submit their request along with the Computerised Birth Certificate issued by a Union Council, Municipal Committee or Cantonment Board, containing the updated name and a verified Civil Registration Management System number.

In cases involving a change of religion, a certificate from a Dar-ul-Ifta is also required.

NADRA clarified that a name on a CNIC can generally be changed only once in a person’s lifetime, except for women seeking to change their names after marriage.

Applicants do not need to bring photocopies of documents.

Instead, they should provide the relevant document numbers issued by NADRA or the Union Council.

Steps to change a name on CNIC

NADRA has outlined the following procedure:

Get a token: Obtain a token at the NADRA registration centre.
Biometric verification: Complete the required biometric checks.
Data entry: Have the corrected information entered, provide fingerprints and get a photograph taken.
Application approval: The application will be reviewed and approved. NADRA said attestation of the application form is not required for CNIC modifications.
Pay the fee: Once the application is approved, the applicant will receive a confirmation message on the mobile number provided. The fee can then be paid at a NADRA office or online, according to the selected category.
Collect the CNIC: Receive the updated identity card from the same NADRA office after the relevant processing period.
