Sindh continues to grapple with devastating floods as yet another protective embankment has given way, submerging villages and destroying farmland. According to reports, a major breach occurred near Bhorti in Naushahro Feroze district, leaving five villages inundated and forcing residents to flee to safer ground.

Villages Underwater After Breach

Local officials confirmed that the Zemindara bund near Bhorti could not withstand the force of the floodwaters and broke, allowing torrents of water to rush into surrounding settlements. At least five villages are now under water, with residents displaced and scrambling for safety. Rescue operations are underway to evacuate the affected population, but rising waters and limited resources have made the task increasingly difficult.

For many villagers, the floods have been nothing short of catastrophic. Families are leaving behind their homes, livestock, and possessions, moving toward higher ground and temporary shelters. Relief workers and local authorities are attempting to provide transportation and emergency supplies, but the sheer scale of the disaster has left many stranded.

Crops Destroyed, Farmers Face Heavy Losses

Families in Dadu have been forced to abandon their homes as floodwaters continue to rise. Entire villages in low-lying areas remain at risk, with residents desperately seeking shelter in makeshift camps or with relatives in safer towns.

Larkana’s Villages Submerged

Further north in Larkana, the situation is worsening. Reports indicate that 20 villages have gone under water near Aqil Agani and Nusrat bund. Floodwaters have engulfed homes, farmland, and livestock, leaving communities cut off from nearby towns. Rescue teams are facing difficulty reaching some areas due to submerged roads and damaged infrastructure.

Residents have expressed frustration at the lack of timely government intervention. Many villagers say they had little warning before the floodwaters arrived and accuse local authorities of failing to strengthen embankments despite repeated warnings.

Sukkur Barrage at Risk

The threat is not limited to Naushahro Feroze, Dadu, and Larkana. The Pakistan Meteorological Department has warned of a high flood situation developing at Sukkur Barrage in the coming days. As one of the largest and most critical barrages in Sindh, Sukkur controls the flow of the Indus River and provides irrigation to millions of acres of farmland. A high flood level here could have devastating effects downstream.

Despite the warnings, residents of the kacha areas near Sukkur have been reluctant to evacuate. Many are unwilling to leave behind their homes, land, and livestock, even as the waters rise. Authorities have repeatedly urged evacuation, but cultural ties to ancestral lands and fears of theft or loss of property have kept many families rooted in harm’s way.

Relief Efforts and Challenges

Authorities have set up relief camps in higher areas and are coordinating with disaster management teams to provide food, water, and medical aid. However, reports from the ground suggest that supplies are insufficient, and many displaced families remain without adequate shelter.

Health experts are concerned about the spread of waterborne diseases, which typically follow large-scale floods. Contaminated drinking water and lack of sanitation facilities put children in particular at risk of diarrhea, cholera, and skin infections. Livestock losses are also mounting, further straining rural economies dependent on cattle for milk, labor, and income.

The ongoing crisis underscores the fragility of Sindh’s flood defense infrastructure. Embankments such as the Zemindara bund are crucial in protecting communities, but many are poorly maintained and unable to withstand extreme water pressure. Each breach not only displaces communities but also deepens the region’s vulnerability to future floods.

Experts note that climate change has intensified the monsoon season in South Asia, bringing unpredictable rainfall and more powerful flood surges. Pakistan, with its vast river system and limited disaster management capacity, remains acutely vulnerable. Without large-scale investment in flood management infrastructure, the cycle of destruction will continue year after year.

Human Toll and Uncertain Future

For the people of Naushahro Feroze, Dadu, and Larkana, the immediate future is filled with uncertainty. Thousands are now homeless, crops have been lost, and livelihoods destroyed. Women and children are particularly at risk, with many lacking access to basic necessities. Schools have been shut down in affected areas, and daily life has come to a standstill.

In the short term, the focus remains on evacuation and rescue operations. But the long-term recovery will require substantial resources and planning. Farmers will need compensation for their losses, homes will need to be rebuilt, and embankments will have to be reconstructed and strengthened.
