Christian Family Laws Bill 2026 submitted to Sindh Assembly
Sindh Assembly Deputy Speaker Anthony Naveed has submitted the Christian Family Laws Bill 2026 to the provincial assembly, proposing wide-ranging reforms to laws governing Christian marriages and family matters in Sindh.
The proposed legislation seeks to replace what its sponsors describe as a centuries-old colonial legal framework with provisions addressing modern family-law requirements while respecting the religious beliefs and traditions of the Christian community.
Under the bill, the minimum marriage age for both Christian men and women would be set at 18 years, while the free and voluntary consent of both parties would be mandatory.
The legislation also sets out legal procedures covering marriage registration, dissolution of marriage, judicial separation, alimony, financial support, remarriage and child custody.
It further proposes that family cases be decided within six months and aims to strengthen legal protection for Christian women, children and families.
Before drafting the bill, a sub-committee of the Minority Caucus held detailed consultations on proposed reforms to Christian family laws.
The committee comprised Deputy Speaker Anthony Naveed, Special Assistant to the Sindh Chief Minister Dr Sham Sundar Advani and Sindh Assembly member Mahesh Kumar Hasija.
The sub-committee consulted representatives of the Catholic Church, Church of Pakistan, ARP, Salvation Army and leading Pentecostal churches.
Christian religious leaders and parliamentary representatives also deliberated on reforms relating to marriage, post-marital family matters and other family rights.
If approved, the legislation would repeal the Christian Marriage Act 1872 and the Divorce Act 1869 to the extent of their application in Sindh.
Anthony Naveed is the initiator and member-in-charge of the Christian Family Laws Bill 2026.
