The worst-affected regions include the mountainous areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), Gilgit-Baltistan, Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), Murree, and Galiyat. According to weather and disaster management authorities, these regions face a heightened risk of landslides that could severely disrupt traffic, block roads, and isolate communities.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) and the Flood Forecasting Division (FFD) have issued warnings that the continuous rainfall could trigger dangerous landslides in hilly areas, especially in districts like Dir, Swat, Shangla, Kohistan, Mansehra, and Abbottabad. These regions are prone to natural slips during prolonged rainfall, especially where road construction and deforestation have weakened natural slopes.

In addition to landslide threats, moderate to heavy rains have caused a sharp increase in water flow through seasonal streams and nullahs (natural watercourses), particularly in Murree, Galiyat, and parts of Kashmir. These streams, often dry during the summer months, can swell rapidly during monsoons, creating flash flood-like conditions and posing threats to nearby settlements and travelers.

The FFD also reported that the Indus River is currently experiencing low-level flooding at Guddu and Sukkur barrages in Sindh. While the situation in other rivers across the country remains stable at their respective headworks, authorities are monitoring the conditions closely as the rain continues in various catchment areas.

Meanwhile, Islamabad has begun to experience the brunt of this intense monsoon activity. Hill torrents flowing from the Margalla Hills into the capital have caused sudden surges in water levels. Areas like Chak Shahzad and Park Road have seen severe flooding in rain-fed streams, with multiple feet of water accumulating and disrupting life. Local reports suggest that six to seven private housing societies are at risk of being severely impacted by water intrusion if the situation is not brought under control quickly.

In the eastern suburb of New Mal (Neomal Sharqi), water has already entered homes. Residents have expressed frustration over what they call the delayed or inadequate response from local disaster management authorities. “We informed the administration multiple times as the water levels began to rise, but so far, no rescue or relief team has shown up,” said a local resident. Visuals circulating on social media show submerged streets, stalled vehicles, and people wading through waist-high water.

The impact of the heavy rainfall is not limited to hilly or rural areas. Urban centers are also under threat. Forecasts indicate that Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Lahore, and Sialkot may experience urban flooding, especially in low-lying neighborhoods with inadequate drainage systems. In previous years, similar weather patterns have led to extensive waterlogging, road closures, and damage to infrastructure in these cities.

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued advisories urging local governments to remain on high alert, particularly in areas with a history of flooding or land erosion. Authorities have been asked to ensure the availability of emergency rescue teams, medical support, and temporary shelters for people affected by the rainfall.

Motorists and travelers have also been advised to avoid unnecessary travel in vulnerable areas, especially in hilly terrain where landslides could block roads without warning. The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Disaster Management Authority has asked residents of Swat, Shangla, Kohistan, and Mansehra to stay indoors and keep emergency supplies ready in case evacuation becomes necessary.

Meteorologists have attributed the intense rainfall to the active monsoon system over northern Pakistan, which is expected to persist over the next few days. The moist monsoon currents from the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea have been fueling heavy rain across Punjab and KP. Experts believe that climate change is playing a role in increasing the intensity and unpredictability of seasonal rains in the region.

Environmental experts have also warned that deforestation, rapid urbanization, and lack of sustainable planning in these regions are contributing to the severity of natural disasters. “We keep building on hillsides, filling in wetlands, and blocking natural water routes. When heavy rain comes, there’s nowhere for the water to go, and disaster is inevitable,” said an environmental consultant based in Islamabad.

In response, the NDMA has reiterated the importance of early warning systems, community-level awareness, and better preparedness in vulnerable regions. It has also called for stricter implementation of construction codes and environmental protection laws to reduce the damage caused by such climate-induced events.

As of now, the public is advised to stay tuned to official weather updates and emergency alerts, avoid travel in affected regions, and cooperate with rescue and relief teams where needed. Schools in certain high-risk areas may be temporarily closed, and contingency plans are being reviewed by local administrations.

In conclusion, while monsoon rains are vital for Pakistan’s agricultural economy, their increasingly destructive nature calls for a comprehensive response—one that includes better urban planning, investment in disaster infrastructure, and community education. The current situation serves as a reminder that without proactive management, natural weather patterns can quickly spiral into national emergencies.

ISLAMABAD: Ongoing spells of torrential rainfall across northern and central Pakistan have raised serious concerns about landslides, urban flooding, and rising water levels in rivers and streams.
