The workshop brought together activists, educators, and community leaders to discuss pressing issues facing Sindh, particularly women in rural areas.

The event served as a platform to address a range of challenges including the ongoing exploitation of Sindh’s natural resources, issues with large-scale corporate farming projects, and the construction of new canals and dams on the Indus River. Women’s issues—ranging from gender-based violence to limited access to education—were also central topics of the workshop.

Key Topics of Discussion:

The workshop opened with detailed presentations and discussions on the history and struggles of Sindhiani Tehreek. Speakers highlighted how the movement has consistently stood at the forefront of class and national struggles in Sindh, fighting for the rights of women and marginalized communities.

Addressing the workshop, Mehnaz Noor Mallah, the Central Joint Secretary of Awami Tehreek, delivered a lecture on the role of Sindhiani Tehreek in class-based and national struggles across Sindh. She traced the roots of the movement back to the ideologies of Rasool Bux Palijo and the anti-dictatorship MRD (Movement for the Restoration of Democracy), emphasizing the sacrifices made by Sindhiani Tehreek’s women in political resistance.

Educationist Bakhtawar Mallah spoke about the alarming state of girls’ education in Sindh, especially in rural areas. She pointed out that despite promises from the state, girls remain deprived of quality education due to inadequate infrastructure, poverty, and entrenched patriarchal norms.

Advocate Kainat Dahiri emphasized the importance of political participation among female students. “Student activism plays a vital role in shaping future leadership. If girls stay away from politics today, we are compromising the leadership of tomorrow,” she said, stressing the need for more inclusive student unions and spaces for young women in academic institutions.

Social activist Samreen Khaskheli discussed the everyday challenges faced by rural women. From domestic violence and forced marriages to lack of healthcare and representation in policy-making, her lecture painted a stark picture of gender inequality in remote Sindhi villages.

Sindhiani Tehreek leader Hawa Khatoon spoke strongly against the violence inflicted upon women. “Each day, women in Sindh fall victim to heinous crimes such as karo-kari (honor killings), forced marriage settlements, and killings in the name of honor,” she said. She also highlighted that despite the presence of laws intended to protect women, implementation remains virtually nonexistent. “Neither the government nor the judiciary is taking these matters seriously,” she added.

Women’s Rights in Crisis:

Speakers collectively expressed concern over the deteriorating status of women in Sindh. “Even though we have laws for women’s protection, justice remains a distant dream for most rural women,” said one of the organizers. The participants criticized the silence of state institutions and courts over recurring incidents of gender-based violence, saying the system fails to offer security or opportunities to the women of Sindh.

The lack of investment in girls’ education was heavily criticized. “There are no serious efforts underway to promote girls’ education. In many rural areas, girls are still unable to access even primary schooling,” said Bakhtawar Mallah. Speakers demanded immediate action from the government and civil society to bridge this educational divide and to provide scholarships, transportation, and safety measures that can help boost female literacy rates.

Natural Resource Exploitation and Environmental Concerns:

The workshop also delved into environmental degradation and the corporate grab of agricultural lands in Sindh. Participants criticized the state’s partnership with multinational corporations under the guise of “corporate farming” projects. These projects, they said, are leading to the dispossession of local farmers, depletion of water resources, and destruction of traditional ways of life.

The construction of new canals and dams on the Indus River was also strongly opposed. Activists claimed that such development schemes are contributing to desertification in Sindh and depriving the province of its rightful share of water. “Sindh’s water is being diverted under development narratives that serve corporate interests, not the local people,” said a representative of SGS-T.

Political Commitment to Social Justice:

Speakers reiterated Sindhiani Tehreek’s unwavering commitment to defending the rights of Sindh’s people, particularly women. “Sindhiani Tehreek is not just a movement; it’s a voice of the oppressed women of Sindh,” said one speaker. The organization has historically played a vital role in anti-dictatorship movements and continues to resist authoritarianism and exploitation in its various forms.

“Our struggle will continue against corporate farming, against the looting of natural resources, and for the empowerment of women in every village and city of Sindh,” declared the organizers, vowing to expand their educational and advocacy campaigns throughout the province.

Conclusion:

The educational and training workshop held by Sindhiani Tehreek and SGS-T in Chhapar Khan Gadhi served as a critical platform to address the intersecting crises of gender injustice, environmental degradation, and socio-political inequality in Sindh. The event underscored the importance of grassroots mobilization and collective action to build a just, equitable, and educated society—especially for women, who remain on the frontline of both struggle and resistance in rural Sindh.

Khairpur Nathan Shah (PR) — A one-day educational and training workshop was held in the village of Chhapar Khan Gadhi near Khairpur Nathan Shah, organized by Sindhiani Tehreek in collaboration with the SGS-T.
