Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta and one of the richest individuals in the world, has long been at the forefront of technological innovation. While he envisions a future where smartphones may be replaced by smart glasses powered by augmented reality, there is still much curiosity about the smartphone he personally uses today. The answer may surprise some, especially those who assume that tech billionaires prefer Apple’s flagship devices.

In an era dominated by intense competition between Android and iOS ecosystems, Mark Zuckerberg’s smartphone choice has been a topic of ongoing interest. So, what phone does the Meta chief actually use? Is he an iPhone loyalist or does he prefer Android-powered devices?

According to various appearances and statements over the years, it appears that Mark Zuckerberg is firmly in the Android camp.

In September 2024, Zuckerberg attended a public event during which keen-eyed observers noticed a smartphone in his hand. That phone was from Samsung—a South Korean tech giant and one of the biggest players in the Android ecosystem. While it wasn’t immediately clear which Samsung model he was using at the time, this sighting further confirmed longstanding rumors that Zuckerberg prefers Android over Apple.

This isn’t the first time he’s been seen with a Samsung phone. In fact, over the years, he has frequently been spotted using Samsung Galaxy smartphones at various conferences and tech events. The consistency with which he is seen using these devices lends credibility to the claim that Android is his operating system of choice.

One might wonder: Why not the iPhone? After all, Apple products are widely popular among business elites, celebrities, and tech enthusiasts. The answer may lie in a deeper ideological and competitive clash between Meta (formerly Facebook) and Apple.

In 2018, tensions between the two companies escalated when Apple CEO Tim Cook publicly criticized Facebook (prior to its rebranding as Meta). Cook stated that Facebook’s handling of user privacy was unethical and that privacy should be treated as a fundamental human right. The criticism came in the wake of major data privacy scandals involving Facebook, including the infamous Cambridge Analytica episode.

Following Cook’s sharp remarks, Zuckerberg reportedly instructed Meta employees to abandon iPhones and switch to Android devices. This revelation came from a New York Times report published in late 2018, which detailed the growing rift between the two tech giants. According to the report, Zuckerberg’s directive was aimed at fostering alignment with Android’s more “open” operating system and distancing the company from Apple’s increasingly critical stance.

In 2020, Mark Zuckerberg addressed his smartphone preference in a Facebook Live Q&A session. During the video, he openly admitted to being a longtime user and fan of Android phones, specifically those made by Samsung. He did not, however, disclose the exact model he was using, keeping some ambiguity alive. Nevertheless, his public endorsement of Samsung reinforced the perception that he prefers Android devices over iPhones.

“Android offers a wider range of options and gives developers more flexibility,” he noted during the conversation. This aligns with Meta’s broader corporate philosophy, which often promotes openness and accessibility in digital platforms.

Zuckerberg’s personal choice is symbolic of the ongoing philosophical divide between Meta and Apple. While both companies are leaders in the global tech industry, their views on privacy, monetization, and platform openness are fundamentally different.

These differences are reflected not just in corporate strategies but also in the tools the companies’ executives choose to use.

Samsung is one of Android’s most trusted and high-performing brands. The company’s flagship devices—such as the Galaxy S series, the Galaxy Z Fold, and the Galaxy Note series—are known for their cutting-edge technology, powerful processors, and premium build quality.

For someone like Zuckerberg, who operates at the intersection of innovation and productivity, Samsung phones offer the perfect blend of performance and flexibility. Features like split-screen multitasking, integration with productivity tools, stylus support (on Note and Fold models), and compatibility with Meta apps like Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp make Samsung a logical choice.

Zuckerberg’s interest in smartphones, however, may not last forever. He has often spoken about the future of augmented reality (AR) and how smart glasses will eventually replace traditional smartphones. In several interviews and keynote addresses, he has positioned AR glasses as a cornerstone of Meta’s future—particularly in the context of the metaverse.

Meta has already launched products like Ray-Ban Stories, smart glasses developed in collaboration with Ray-Ban, and is continuing to invest billions of dollars into its Reality Labs division to build the next generation of wearable computing devices.

“Smart glasses will eventually replace phones,” Zuckerberg said in a 2023 interview. “They will be the most natural and immersive way to access digital experiences.”

Mark Zuckerberg’s smartphone preference may not influence your next purchase, but it does shed light on the inner workings of Silicon Valley’s biggest players. His loyalty to Android—and more specifically to Samsung—appears to be both a matter of personal preference and corporate philosophy. At the same time, his focus is increasingly shifting away from traditional smartphones toward next-generation wearable tech.

While he may be using a Samsung Galaxy today, it’s clear that Zuckerberg is betting on a future where the smartphone is no longer the center of digital life. Until then, Android remains the Meta CEO’s platform of choice.

Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta and one of the richest individuals in the world, has long been at the forefront of technological innovation.
