This incident adds to the growing list of extrajudicial killings carried out under the guise of counter-terrorism operations, which human rights organizations have long criticized as tools of oppression against the Kashmiri population.

According to local sources and eyewitnesses, the Indian army launched a cordon and search operation (CASO) in a remote village of Poonch district under the pretext of receiving intelligence inputs about the presence of militants. As has become the norm, the entire area was sealed off, and communication was restricted. During the operation, two young men were reportedly taken into custody and later killed in what the Indian military claimed was an encounter with “terrorists.”

However, residents of the area tell a different story. According to them, the two martyrs were local civilians with no links to any armed group. The Indian forces allegedly executed them in cold blood and later dressed the incident as an encounter to support their fabricated narrative of fighting terrorism. This tactic is not new in the occupied region, where countless families have lost their loved ones to similar staged encounters.

This incident follows closely on the heels of another fake encounter that occurred earlier this week in Dachigam, on the outskirts of Srinagar. In that operation, three more Kashmiri youths were killed. The Indian army later claimed that the youths were involved in militant activities, a charge strongly refuted by their families and the local community. Residents reported that the youths had been picked up by security forces days before the so-called encounter took place.

These incidents are part of a broader pattern that has been developing over years. After the failure of “Operation Sandur,” which aimed to dismantle local resistance, the Indian military has now launched a new campaign dubbed “Operation Mahadev.” Under this operation, security forces have intensified raids, arrests, and staged encounters across various districts of Kashmir. Analysts believe this sudden spike in operations is an attempt to project success against militancy before upcoming political events in India.

The Indian government has often used high-profile operations and fake encounters as propaganda tools to show a tough stance on terrorism, especially in the context of Jammu and Kashmir. Home Minister Amit Shah recently claimed that three terrorists involved in the Pahalgam attack had been eliminated. However, these claims are increasingly being viewed with skepticism due to repeated allegations of fake encounters and extrajudicial killings by Indian forces.

Human rights advocates have expressed serious concern over the use of fake encounters as a method of control. In many cases, independent investigations have revealed that civilians were labeled as militants posthumously to justify their killings. Despite repeated calls for accountability, Indian authorities have rarely held anyone responsible for these actions, creating a culture of impunity within the armed forces operating in Kashmir.

The local population continues to live under constant fear. Search operations often involve harassment, physical abuse, property destruction, and even abductions. The psychological toll on Kashmiris, especially the youth, has been immense. Over the years, thousands of young men have disappeared or been killed in suspicious circumstances, with their families still waiting for justice.

Reacting to the recent killings in Poonch, civil society organizations and human rights activists in Kashmir have condemned the incident and demanded an independent international probe. “These fake encounters are nothing but state terrorism under the guise of law enforcement. The international community cannot remain silent anymore,” said a prominent human rights lawyer based in Srinagar.

Protests erupted in parts of Poonch following the killing of the two youths. Demonstrators, carrying pictures of the martyrs, chanted slogans against the Indian occupation and demanded justice. Several residents alleged that the Indian army threatened them with dire consequences if they spoke to the media or human rights organizations.

Meanwhile, family members of the martyred youths broke down while speaking to local reporters. “My son was a college student. He had dreams of becoming a teacher. He was not a terrorist. They took him away and killed him in a fake encounter,” said the father of one of the slain youths, his voice shaking with grief and rage.

International human rights organizations have long documented India’s violations in Kashmir. Reports from Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, and the United Nations have highlighted the extrajudicial killings, torture, and arbitrary detentions carried out by Indian forces. However, despite this mounting evidence, the global response has been tepid at best.

Many believe that the lack of strong international condemnation encourages the Indian state to continue its brutal policies in Kashmir unchecked. The situation becomes even more dire considering the legislative clampdown, censorship, and surveillance that prevents Kashmiris from voicing their struggles to the outside world.

In summary, the killing of two more youths in Poonch is a tragic reminder of the ongoing human rights crisis in Indian-occupied Kashmir. As the cycle of violence continues, so does the suffering of innocent civilians caught between military aggression and political silence. Unless the international community intervenes decisively and holds India accountable for its actions, these fake encounters and the pain they bring to countless Kashmiri families will continue unabated.

In yet another grim chapter of state-sponsored violence, Indian occupation forces have martyred two more innocent Kashmiri youths in a staged encounter in Poonch district of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK).
