Joe Root, known for his elegant stroke play and consistency at the crease, achieved this feat in his 157th Test match—an impressive accomplishment that reflects his enduring excellence in the longest format of the game. With this innings, he moved past Ricky Ponting’s total of 13,378 runs, which the former Australian skipper had accumulated over the course of 168 Test matches.

Root’s rise to the second position in the all-time Test run-scorers list is not just a personal milestone but a moment of pride for English cricket. His journey in red-ball cricket has been marked by incredible resilience, adaptability to various conditions, and the ability to anchor England’s innings under pressure. Over the years, he has played memorable knocks in both home and away conditions, standing tall against some of the fiercest bowling attacks in the world.

What makes this achievement even more remarkable is the speed at which Root has climbed the ranks. Unlike many of his contemporaries, Root’s run-scoring has remained consistent throughout his career. Whether it’s the spinning tracks of the subcontinent, the bouncy pitches of Australia and South Africa, or the swinging conditions of England, Joe Root has delivered time and again.

His innings of 120 not out against India was a classic example of his calm demeanor, technical precision, and mental toughness. Coming in at a crucial juncture, Root stabilized the innings and played with a mix of caution and aggression. His ability to rotate the strike, pick gaps, and convert ones into twos kept the scoreboard ticking. He was especially strong on the back foot and showcased his trademark cover drives and late cuts with finesse.

By surpassing Ricky Ponting, Root now only trails India’s Sachin Tendulkar, who holds the record for the most runs in Test cricket with 15,921 runs in 200 matches. While Tendulkar’s record is monumental and may take a while to chase down, Root’s current form and fitness levels suggest that he could pose a serious challenge to that number in the coming years.
