The announcement was made during a general body meeting organized by the High Court Bar Association in Mirpurkhas, aimed at combating the growing drug menace in the region.

The meeting saw large participation from lawyers representing districts including Mirpurkhas, Umerkot, Tharparkar, and Sanghar.

During the session, President of the High Court Bar Association, Mir Pervez Talpur, strongly condemned the drug crisis and stated, “The drug trade is a calculated conspiracy to destroy the new generation of Sindh. Deadly substances like ‘ice’ are being deliberately introduced in educational institutions to ruin both the academic future and the consciousness of our youth.”

He raised serious concerns over how such large quantities of drugs are entering southern districts, questioning, “How is it possible for such massive quantities of narcotics to cross borders unchecked? This implies that not only the SSPs and DIGs are involved, but also other powerful elements are backing this trade.”

General Secretary of the Bar, Ghaffar Narejo, while addressing the gathering, stated that elected representatives and their close associates are directly involved in the drug business. “They receive extortion money from drug dealers, while the police arrest small-time users and roadside sellers just to show that action is being taken.”

He further alleged, “Police often let off the big dealers while targeting poor addicts and petty sellers for statistics. And now they are accusing lawyers of being complicit too. If they believe lawyers are involved, we demand a list. We will terminate the membership of any such lawyer from our associations.”

President of the District Bar Association, Abdul Kareem Wark, remarked that drug trade is at its peak in Mirpurkhas Division. “We, the lawyers, know exactly who the real dealers are. Therefore, we have decided not to take on any case involving known drug traffickers. However, if an innocent person is falsely implicated, we will defend them,” he clarified.

From Umerkot, lawyer Liaquat Sehti added, “Previously, drugs were sold at specific locations, but now they are openly available across Umerkot. Even schools and colleges are not spared anymore, as narcotics are being distributed there under a systematic conspiracy to ruin young minds.”

He mentioned that a list of key drug dealers had already been submitted to the Umerkot SSP, but no action has been taken so far.

Meanwhile, lawyer Altaf Junejo from Sanghar emphasized the urgent need for public awareness regarding the devastating effects of drugs. “It’s essential to create societal pressure on the administration to take strict measures to curb the drug trade,” he said.

The event was also addressed by other prominent lawyers including Aziz Memon, Shoukat Rahmoon, Mumtaz Jarwar, and Mir Muhammad Nohri, who echoed similar sentiments. They collectively called for a robust and well-organized movement to end drug trafficking in the region.

They alleged that involvement in the drug trade stretches up to high-ranking officials, including DIGs, SSPs, SHOs, as well as some so-called journalists and social workers, all of whom are allegedly complicit in this illegal business.

The lawyers outlined the first phase of their movement: sending written appeals to key figures including the Prime Minister, Chief Minister, and Chief Justice, urging them to take immediate action to curb the drug trade. If no action is taken, the movement will escalate to protest demonstrations across Taluka Bars, District Bars, and High Court Bars throughout Sindh.

This bold move by the legal community sends a clear message that the judiciary’s front-liners are no longer willing to remain silent on this grave issue. The call for accountability and action is growing louder, as the defenders of law step up to defend the future of Sindh’s youth.

Mirpurkhas: Lawyers Announce Movement Against Drug Trade In a strong and unified stance, lawyers from across the Mirpurkhas Division have launched a movement against the rampant drug trade, declaring they will no longer take up cases for known drug dealers.
