Islamabad (Tuesday, July 22, 2025)<\/em> \u2013 Federal Minister for Planning, Development, and Special Initiatives, Ahsan Iqbal, has issued a strong call to the developed world to fulfill their climate-related pledges and deliver on the promises made under international agreements. While addressing a high-level event on climate change in Islamabad, the minister highlighted the growing existential threat posed by global warming, particularly to developing nations like Pakistan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Climate change is no longer a distant concern\u2014it has become a frightening and immediate reality,” said Ahsan Iqbal. He emphasized that Pakistan, despite contributing less than 1% to global carbon emissions, is one of the countries most severely affected by the climate crisis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He drew attention to the rapid melting of glaciers in Pakistan\u2019s northern regions, stating that this phenomenon has reached its highest levels in the past six decades. \u201cThe melting of glaciers is not just an environmental concern, it is a direct threat to our lifeline\u2014the Indus River system,\u201d he added. The Indus basin supports agriculture, drinking water, and energy for millions, and disruptions in this system can lead to widespread ecological and economic disasters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ahsan Iqbal underscored the urgent need for international action. He reiterated that the commitment of $100 billion annually in climate finance for developing countries\u2014agreed upon in the Paris Climate Accord\u2014must be honored. \u201cThis is not charity. This is not aid. This is climate justice,\u201d he declared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He argued that countries in the Global South are suffering due to the environmental degradation caused by industrialization in the North over the past two centuries. Therefore, the responsibility of helping vulnerable nations prepare for and adapt to climate impacts lies primarily with developed nations. \u201cThose who polluted the planet for their prosperity must now contribute to its healing,\u201d the minister asserted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He pointed out that Pakistan has faced deadly floods, extreme heatwaves, erratic monsoons, and agricultural disruption due to climate change. \u201cOur country is on the frontline of climate-induced disasters, and the world cannot remain a bystander,\u201d said Iqbal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ahsan Iqbal noted that while Pakistan is investing in adaptation and sustainable development strategies, the country lacks the financial capacity to cope with the scale of the climate emergency alone. \u201cWe are taking steps through green energy initiatives, reforestation drives, and water conservation projects, but these measures need to be complemented with global support,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The minister further emphasized that financial flows should not be delayed due to bureaucratic red tape or lack of political will. He called upon developed nations to unlock climate finance channels and support infrastructure, technology transfer, and capacity-building in countries that are struggling to meet the demands of climate resilience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said that developing countries are no longer asking for favors\u2014they are demanding fairness. \u201cThis is about ensuring that no country is left behind in the global transition toward sustainability,\u201d he explained. \u201cIt is about enabling all nations to withstand the climate crisis that threatens humanity itself.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Referring to the 2022 catastrophic floods in Pakistan, which displaced millions and caused billions in damage, he said that such events are not isolated\u2014they are part of a disturbing global trend that requires a coordinated international response.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ahsan Iqbal warned that failure to act now would only exacerbate the global humanitarian crisis. \u201cIf wealthy countries do not stand by vulnerable nations today, the cost tomorrow will be far greater\u2014not just in dollars, but in human lives,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He concluded his remarks by saying, \u201cThe world must move from rhetoric to action. We have had enough statements, pledges, and conferences. What we now need is delivery\u2014delivery of climate finance, delivery of technological assistance, and delivery of global solidarity.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOur demand is not unreasonable,\u201d he said. \u201cWe will continue to press for climate justice. Do More is not just a slogan\u2014it is a necessity.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
