Mumbai: A disturbing video from Mumbai has gone viral, showing a man laughing while his aggressive dog viciously attacked an 11-year-old boy inside a parked auto-rickshaw. The video has triggered a wave of outrage across Indian social media, with users calling for strict punishment against the dog’s owner.

Incident Captured on Video

According to Indian media reports, the video shows a Pit Bull of American breed unleashed by its owner inside a parked rickshaw where a young boy, identified as Hamza, was sitting. Instead of intervening, the owner – later identified as Sohail – sits on the front seat of the rickshaw, laughing and watching the attack unfold.

In the footage, Hamza can be seen visibly terrified, cowering inside the rickshaw while the Pit Bull sits nearby. Within seconds, the dog suddenly lunges at the boy, biting him multiple times. Hamza desperately tries to escape and eventually manages to leap out of the rickshaw, running for safety. The dog follows, tearing at his clothes, while the owner continues to remain seated and unbothered.

Public Outrage and Police Action

The horrific clip quickly went viral, sparking nationwide condemnation. People have criticized both the lack of empathy from the dog’s owner and the inaction of bystanders, many of whom were seen recording the incident instead of helping the child.

Hamza, in a brief statement to the media, said:

“I was screaming for help, but no one came. Everyone was just recording videos.”

Following a complaint filed by Hamza’s father, local police have registered a case against Sohail, the dog owner, and initiated legal proceedings. The charges include criminal negligence and endangerment of life, and authorities have confirmed that an investigation is underway.

Intentional Attack?

Hamza’s father told reporters that Sohail deliberately released the dog on his son while he was playing inside the parked rickshaw. The motive behind the act remains unclear, but initial reports suggest it may have been a targeted act of cruelty.

The dog reportedly had no muzzle or leash, a violation of pet ownership rules, especially for breeds known for aggressive behavior. Animal experts have noted that Pit Bulls require responsible handling and proper training to avoid such dangerous incidents.

Sensitive Content and Media Responsibility

Due to the graphic and traumatic nature of the video, most news outlets have opted not to include the footage in their coverage. Nonetheless, the incident has reignited debates in India over pet laws, irresponsible ownership, and the need for stricter enforcement of animal control regulations, especially in urban environments.

Legal and Social Implications

Legal experts say Sohail could face serious penalties, including imprisonment and a permanent ban on owning pets, depending on the extent of the boy’s injuries and the outcome of the investigation.

Social media users have called for the dog to be taken into custody by animal welfare authorities, with many concerned about the risk the dog poses to others if it remains under Sohail’s care.

Conclusion

This tragic and avoidable incident has highlighted glaring gaps in public safety, bystander responsibility, and pet ownership regulations in India. As Hamza recovers from both physical wounds and emotional trauma, citizens and lawmakers alike are demanding swift justice and better protections for children in public spaces.

Whether this incident will lead to legislative reforms remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: such cruelty—human or otherwise—must not go unpunished.
