Pakistan Shaheens have suffered a setback ahead of their England tour as off-spinner Sajid Khan has been ruled out due to a thumb injury sustained during practice.

According to team sources, Sajid Khan suffered a fracture in his right thumb during a training session in Tonbridge, England. The injury occurred just days before the team’s opening one-day match against a professional county club scheduled for Tuesday (today) at Beckenham. Following medical evaluation, it was confirmed that Sajid will be unable to participate in the tour and has been withdrawn from the squad.

The injury has forced Sajid to make an early return to Pakistan. As per reports, he will be traveling back on the first available flight. However, the team management has not yet requested a replacement for the injured player, suggesting they may proceed with the remaining squad for now.

Blow for the Pakistan Shaheens

The injury comes as a major disappointment for Sajid Khan, who was looking to make a strong impression on the selectors through the Pakistan Shaheens platform, especially ahead of future national team selections. The Shaheens’ tour of England is considered an important opportunity for emerging and fringe players to gain experience in overseas conditions and showcase their talent against competitive county opposition.

Sajid Khan, known for his classical off-spin and control, has been part of the national setup in recent years and has played Test cricket for Pakistan. His inclusion in the Shaheens squad was viewed as a step toward regaining full match rhythm and potentially pushing for a place in Pakistan’s main squad, especially with major ICC tournaments approaching.

No Replacement Yet

Despite the blow, team officials have chosen not to immediately name a replacement. This could be due to the short duration of the series or confidence in the existing spin options within the squad. It also reflects the logistical challenges involved in flying a new player to England at short notice.

As the Shaheens prepare for their first match of the series today in Beckenham, all eyes will now be on the remaining players to step up. The team is expected to play a number of one-day games and possibly red-ball fixtures during the tour, giving young talents the chance to adapt to English playing conditions.

Significance of the Tour

The tour is part of the Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) ongoing strategy to groom future national players by exposing them to international-style challenges at the development level. The Shaheens represent a critical pathway between domestic cricket and the national team. Tours like this not only test a player’s technical ability but also their temperament, adaptability, and fitness under different conditions.

With Sajid Khan’s unfortunate injury, it serves as a reminder of the physical toll the game can take — even during training sessions. The PCB’s medical panel is expected to monitor his recovery closely upon his return to Pakistan, and he may undergo further scans and treatment depending on the severity of the fracture.

Career Setback or Temporary Pause?

While this injury is certainly a setback for Sajid Khan, it is not expected to sideline him long-term if recovery goes smoothly. However, with increasing competition for spin bowling spots in the national team, missing even a short tour like this could impact his momentum and visibility in front of selectors.

Over the past year, Pakistan has seen a number of promising spinners emerge across formats, making the competition stiffer. Sajid’s challenge will be to recover quickly, maintain fitness, and make a strong comeback in domestic or ‘A’ team opportunities.

Looking Ahead

For now, the Pakistan Shaheens will carry on without Sajid Khan as they kick off their England tour. The opening match at Beckenham is expected to be closely watched by coaches and selectors alike. The tour offers a chance for youngsters and fringe players to make a statement — especially with the national team in a rebuilding phase across formats.

Fans and cricket analysts will also be keeping a close eye on how the Shaheens handle the challenge, particularly in the absence of a senior bowling figure like Sajid. Meanwhile, Sajid Khan’s supporters will be hoping for a speedy recovery and a quick return to competitive cricket.

The PCB is yet to issue an official statement on the injury, but further updates regarding his medical status and possible replacement (if any) are expected in the coming days.
