JUI leader Nasir Mehmood Soomro also arrived at the protest camp with his workers, where fierce slogans were raised against the federal government. The lawyers have issued an ultimatum that if the controversial canal scheme is not withdrawn, they will also block the railway tracks. What began as a movement to protect the river has now entered a new phase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Addressing the protest camp, Nasir Mehmood Soomro said that the new canals pose a threat to Sindh\u2019s fertile lands and the Indus delta\u2019s ecosystem, and that drinking water in Sindh\u2019s cities will become scarce. \u201cThis is a fight for Sindh\u2019s very existence. We are not afraid of dying or killing; we have taken to the field for the sake of our future generations,\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Nasir Mehmood Soomro said that the controversial canal project also violates the 1991 Water-Sharing Accord. \u201cJamiat Ulema-e-Islam stands with the people of Sindh; we will not allow a robbery of the river,\u201d he declared.
