The report reviewed other cyber attacks against European allies of Ukraine amid the ongoing war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-why-was-the-netherlands-targeted\">Why was the Netherlands targeted?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Netherlands is an \u201cinteresting target country\u201d for Moscow due to its continued support for Ukraine, the MIVD said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last week, Dutch Defense Minister Ruben Brekelmans announced \u20ac150 million for Ukraine\u2019s air defense systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe see the Russian threat against Europe is increasing, including after a possible end to the war against Ukraine,\u201d MIVD director Peter Reesink said in the agency\u2019s annual report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reesink said last year\u2019s attack against the public service aimed to \u201cgain control of the system,\u201d adding that it was \u201cthwarted.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAs far as known, this is the first time that such a sabotage attack has been carried out against such a digital control system in the Netherlands,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The agency also warned against Russian units mapping infrastructure and conducting acts of sabotage in the North Sea which lies between the UK and continental Europe.
