A physical altercation was narrowly averted between Leader of the Opposition Mir Younus Aziz Zehri and opposition member Maulana Hidayat-ur-Rehman during a session of the Balochistan Assembly following a heated exchange over a resolution against the Sardari (tribal chieftain) system.

The confrontation occurred after Speaker Abdul Khaliq Achakzai disposed of a resolution submitted by Maulana Hidayat-ur-Rehman seeking action against the Sardari system.

Following the conclusion of the assembly’s agenda, Maulana Hidayat-ur-Rehman stood up to speak on a point of order, prompting an objection from Opposition Leader Mir Younus Aziz Zehri.

Zehri questioned why Maulana Hidayat-ur-Rehman was being allowed to speak after the speaker had already disposed of the resolution.

Responding to the objection, Maulana Hidayat-ur-Rehman asked the opposition leader what his problem was, leading to a heated exchange between the two lawmakers.

As the argument escalated, Mir Younus Aziz Zehri attempted to move toward Maulana Hidayat-ur-Rehman’s seat, but other assembly members intervened and prevented him from reaching the lawmaker, averting a possible physical confrontation.

Earlier, Speaker Abdul Khaliq Achakzai had disposed of Maulana Hidayat-ur-Rehman’s resolution against the Sardari system through a formal ruling.

The speaker said legislation against the Sardari system had already been passed in the past and that judicial rulings on the matter also existed.

He said the existing legislation and previous court decisions meant there was no justification for bringing the resolution before the House in its present form.

Following the speaker’s ruling, Maulana Hidayat-ur-Rehman said he would amend the resolution and submit it to the Balochistan Assembly again.
