ISLAMABAD: From the spinning mills of Faisalabad to the export houses of Karachi and Lahore, textiles and apparel continue to be at the core of Pakistan\u2019s manufacturing and exports, employing a significant portion of its industrial workforce, according to Mumtaz Zahra Baloch, the country\u2019s ambassador to France.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

She was addressing a conference titled \u201cCotton thread \u2013 A multi-millennial history of the culture of Cotton of Pakistan\u201d held at the Embassy of Pakistan, Paris.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The event, brought together diplomats, UNESCO officials, representatives of the French textile industry, and fashion designers, to explore the long history of cotton cultivation in Pakistan and its transition to a global fashion industry, a press release, Saturday, said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ambassador traced the history of cotton in ancient Pakistan with its discovery around 7000 years ago and the contributions of farmers, spinners and weavers of the region in creation of a textile tradition and laying the foundations of a global textile industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She explained that as cotton travelled across continents, it carried with it not only a valuable commodity but also knowledge, craftsmanship and cultural exchange.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFor Pakistan, however, cotton is not simply an agricultural crop or an economic commodity. It is also deeply woven into Pakistan\u2019s cultural heritage, through centuries-old traditions of spinning, weaving, embroidery and textile craftsmanship,\u201d she said, adding these living traditions are part of the intangible cultural heritage that UNESCO seeks to safeguard: the knowledge, skills and craftsmanship passed from one generation to the next.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fredrika Sundberg, founder of M\/s Sunberg and President of the group \u201cCercle des Amis du Pakistan\u201d shared her expertise on Pakistan\u2019s textile sector, retracing the millennia-old roots of cotton in Pakistan, from its historic origins in the Indus Valley to today\u2019s textile industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She also highlighted Pakistan\u2019s export potential in the textile industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Catherine Jarrige, archaeologist and former Co-Director of the French Archaeological Mission to the Indus Basin, shared her insight on the evidence of cotton cultivation in ancient Pakistan and highlighted that archeological finds have shown that cotton was cultivated, spun and woven over 7000 years ago in Indus Valley Civilization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The purpose of the event, which was planned as part of the Embassy\u2019s public and economic diplomacy outreach, was to draw attention to Pakistan\u2019s historical and current ties to cotton production, the textile industry, and its importance to the country\u2019s economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
