Russia struck Ukraine\u2019s capital Kyiv with a massive wave of missiles and drones on Sunday, killing four people in the city and surrounding region and injuring dozens, officials \u200bsaid.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Explosions reverberated through Kyiv just after 1 a.m. (2200 GMT Saturday), following a warning by Ukraine\u2019s air force \u200con its Telegram channel that Russia might launch a hypersonic Oreshnik ballistic missile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The air force did not respond to a request for comment on whether an Oreshnik struck any target during the attack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said that two people had been killed and 56 others \u200binjured in the attacks on the city, with 30 of those hospitalised. Some damage was reported in the \u200bcity\u2019s historic Independence Square.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt was a terrible night for Kyiv,\u201d Klitschko said in a Telegram \u2060message from the site of one attack. \u201cRight now, rescuers are putting out fires and clearing debris. Medics are providing assistance \u200bto the victims.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many residents sought shelter overnight in the city\u2019s metro stations. Nataliia Zvarych, 62, said she had rushed to \u200bher local station as explosions started rocking the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt was terrifying, scary,\u201d she said. \u201cWe have been sitting here for more than three hours now, listening to the explosions up there.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The head of the city\u2019s military administration said that more than 40 locations in the city had \u200bbeen damaged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Strikes were reported in other parts of Ukraine. A further two people were killed and nine others injured in \u200battacks on the broader Kyiv region surrounding the capital, said regional governor Mykola Kalashnyk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As the sun rose, black smoke from \u200cseveral fires \u2060drifted across the skyline, leaving an acrid smell in parts of the city. Firefighters used hoses to douse the flames in damaged buildings while rescue workers evacuated the wounded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The front facade of one five-storey residential building had collapsed, images showed. Officials reported damage to offices, shops, warehouses and the foyer of a metro station.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

President Volodymyr Zelenskiy had warned on Saturday \u200bthat Russia was preparing a strike \u200bagainst Ukraine using the \u2060Oreshnik missile, citing intelligence from Ukraine, the U.S. and Europe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Russia has already attacked Ukraine twice with the Oreshnik, a missile with a range of several thousand kilometres and capable of carrying \u200ba nuclear warhead. Russian President Vladimir Putin has boasted that it is impossible to intercept \u200bbecause of its \u2060reported velocity of more than 10 times the speed of sound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Zelenskiy\u2019s warning came after Putin ordered his military to prepare options for retaliation against Ukraine for a drone strike on a student dorm in the Russian-occupied Luhansk region of eastern Ukraine on Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ukraine\u2019s \u2060military denied \u200bthe accusations and said it had targeted a Russian drone command \u200bunit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
