{"id":21952,"date":"2026-05-24T15:35:38","date_gmt":"2026-05-24T10:35:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pakjazbo.com\/?p=21952"},"modified":"2026-05-24T15:35:40","modified_gmt":"2026-05-24T10:35:40","slug":"intl-day-of-markhor-being-observed-today","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pakjazbo.com\/?p=21952","title":{"rendered":"Int\u2019l Day of Markhor being observed today"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>International Day of Markhor is being observed on Sunday (today).<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Proclaimed by the UN General Assembly following a resolution spearheaded by Pakistan, this observance highlights the ecological importance of the markhor, its natural habitat, and the need to protect this endangered wild mountain goat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This year, official theme of the day is \u201cMarkhor and Mountain Biodiversity: Strengthening Global Efforts for Ecosystem Conservation and Sustainable Development.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Markhor is the national animal of Pakistan, where it is also known as \u201cscrew-horned goat.\u201d The resolution invites the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) to facilitate the observance of the International Day of the Markhor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Pakistan, Markhors are found in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) province\u2019s Chitral, Kohistan and Kalam regions, as well as the Gilgit-Baltistan region, the Balochistan province and parts of Azad Kashmir.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em><a href=\"https:\/\/arynews.tv\/unga-declares-may-24-as-intl-day-of-pakistans-markhor\">UNGA declares May 24 as int\u2019l day of Pakistan\u2019s Markhor<\/a><\/em><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once believed to be on the brink of extinction, Markhor numbers have gradually increased, doubling in a couple of decades, with a particular jump since 2014.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is now the 10th straight year that numbers of the long-horned wild goat have grown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe population of the Markhor has been increasing with an annual ratio of 2% since 2014,\u201d Saeed Abbas, an official with the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) in Pakistan, was quoted as saying in a media interview.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The animalr\u2019s current estimated population is between 3,500 and 5,000, a majority of them in KP, followed by Gilgit-Baltistan and Balochistan, according to Abbas.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>International Day of Markhor is being observed on Sunday (today).
