SUKKUR: Secretary Information of Sehar Foundation Trust, Abdul Samad Gadat, has strongly condemned the alleged arrest of renowned classical dancer Sheema Kermani and the reported mistreatment she faced, terming the incident an act of “state fascism.”

In a statement issued here, Gadat said that preventing a peaceful press conference at the Karachi Press Club and adopting an inappropriate attitude toward a respected artist was not only a violation of freedom of expression but also against societal values. He emphasized that such actions undermine democratic principles and discourage cultural and intellectual discourse.

He further stated that organizing a press conference to announce a walk and rally on the occasion of Mother’s Day cannot be considered a crime. However, the alleged detention and mistreatment of a woman, particularly a mother, on such an occasion is deeply regrettable and शर्मناک.

Gadat warned that such actions by the authorities could embolden extremist elements in society, potentially leading to increased intolerance and suppression of artistic and social expression.

He demanded a transparent investigation into the incident and called for strict legal action against those responsible. He stressed that accountability is essential to ensure that no citizen is subjected to such treatment in the future.

The incident has sparked concern among civil society members, who are urging the authorities to uphold fundamental rights and respect the dignity of individuals, particularly those contributing to the country’s cultural landscape.
