This sharp increase has raised serious concerns among consumers, who claim that LPG is being sold at nearly Rs. 200 above the official government rate, putting an additional financial burden on households already struggling with inflation.

According to multiple consumer reports, the price hike has occurred rapidly, leaving many residents with little choice but to either pay the inflated rates or cut back on essential energy usage. LPG, widely used for cooking and heating in both urban and rural areas, is considered a critical household necessity. The sudden escalation in its cost has therefore triggered widespread frustration and complaints.

Citizens have expressed anger over what they describe as unchecked profiteering in the market. Many believe that weak enforcement of price controls has allowed retailers and distributors to sell LPG at excessive rates without fear of penalties. “We are forced to buy LPG at whatever price the shopkeepers demand because we have no alternative,” said one consumer, highlighting the helplessness faced by ordinary people.

On the other hand, industry representatives have offered a different perspective. Chairman of the LPG Distributors Association, Abdul Hadi Khan, has attributed the price hike primarily to supply constraints and increased procurement costs. According to him, distributors are receiving LPG at higher prices due to limited availability in the market, which ultimately translates into higher retail rates for consumers.

He further explained that the imbalance between supply and demand has been a persistent issue, especially during periods of increased consumption. When supply falls short, prices tend to spike, and without timely intervention, the situation can quickly spiral out of control. He also pointed out that logistical challenges and fluctuations in international LPG prices could be contributing factors.

Abdul Hadi Khan also criticized the regulatory authorities, particularly the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) and LPG importers, for their inability to control the situation. He claimed that despite existing price mechanisms and monitoring systems, these institutions have failed to ensure that LPG is sold at official rates in the market. This lack of oversight, he argued, has allowed the current crisis to worsen.

Experts believe that the issue highlights deeper structural problems within Pakistan’s energy sector. The country heavily relies on imported LPG to meet its domestic needs, making it vulnerable to global price fluctuations and supply disruptions. In addition, inefficiencies in the distribution network often lead to artificial shortages, which can be exploited by certain market players to increase profits.

The ongoing price hike has significant implications for low- and middle-income households, many of whom depend on LPG as their primary fuel source. With electricity and natural gas shortages already affecting large parts of the country, LPG serves as an essential backup. However, at the current price of Rs. 500 per kilogram, it is becoming increasingly unaffordable for a large segment of the population.

Consumer rights groups have called on the government to take immediate action to stabilize prices and ensure fair distribution. They have urged authorities to crack down on illegal overcharging, improve monitoring mechanisms, and address supply bottlenecks. Some have also suggested increasing local production and diversifying import sources to reduce dependence on a limited number of suppliers.

In response to public outcry, there are expectations that regulatory bodies will step up their efforts to control the market. However, past experiences suggest that without consistent enforcement and long-term policy measures, such price surges may continue to recur.

In conclusion, the rise in LPG prices to a record Rs. 500 per kilogram has exposed critical weaknesses in Pakistan’s energy supply chain and regulatory framework. While supply shortages and rising costs are contributing factors, the lack of effective oversight has amplified the crisis. Immediate and sustained intervention will be necessary to protect consumers and restore stability in the LPG market.

Karachi is currently witnessing an unprecedented surge in the price of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), with rates soaring to a record Rs. 500 per kilogram.
